Upper motor mount

Anyone ever break a bolt head off in one of these? How hard was it to replace either the entire mount, or pull the remainder of the stud?

I somehow managed to snap the head off one of the bolts when the weight of the engine on the one bolt made it jam in the mount when 1/4 of the way out. The Jack I was using had no pressure and had moved the motor into the compromising position without my noticing. The bolt wasn't previously crossthreaded, so all I can figure is once one bolt was removed, all the tension shifted to the other one and put it under too much strain causing it to jam.

A new piece, which includes BOTH halves of the motor mount, is going to cost $185. Which seems a little steep.

GM makes a multitude of different colors (mine being yellow, by the yellow paint mark made between the 2 bolts) that vary in price.

Any information on how to remove the stud, ease of replacing the engine half of the mount, or where to obtain one for ALOT cheaper than GM's price, is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks Guys!

Is this motor mount on youre 1999 Cavalier Z24 ?. Also if so, Is it the lower motor mount with the 2 bolts that on top of the rubber mount?. That are broken?. U may want to purchase something like this : http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?cat=Mechanics+Tools&pid=00952158000&vertical=TOOL&subcat=Taps+%26+Dies&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes

That should remove the bolts out nicely for you.

It IS on my '99 Z24.

The Motor Mount in question is the Passenger side upper mount that has half on the timing cover face of the engine and the other half mounted right next to the passenger fender. There are 2 bolts holding the motor in the air. My car is currently using only one bolt. Thanks for the info on the "Easy-Out". I'll have to look into picking up this set.

How much do you think I would get charged for having someone else pull the stud out?

Okay, apparently this is ALOT more difficult to visualize than it is to describe.

Z24 owners, open your hood. Look at the upper motor mount on the left near the passenger fender. It will have AC lines running right over it. In fact, the clips that hold the lines in place are attached to the mount. Now look at the 2 bolt heads just to the right of the lines connected to the same mount. They are where the 2 halves of the mount come together. There will be one closer to the firewall and one closer to the alternator. They don't go into the engine, they're just supporting the engine from falling on the ground. In other words, if you undo these 2 bolts, the engine hits the ground. The one closer to the alternator is the one I broke. So the one closer to the firewall is the only one supporting the engine.

A new mount is being sought after, but I've visited numerous yards, and I have other junkyard scavengers on other websites keeping an eye open for me. Most Z24's I've found have the engine removed with the half of the mount that I need gone with it. The 2.4 Twin Cam, is a popular motor for replacement for some reason or another.

No one can seem to find the half of the mount that I need. If you look between the 2 bolts, you'll find a yellow streak of paint. This verifies the appropriate part. Apparently there are numerous mounts for the car, but only one will work for my specific car. GM requests my VIN everytime I go to buy parts for my car. I would have thought all Z24's were the same, but apparently not.

If someone here has a parts car with that piece, would you be willing to sell it and for how much? The half I need DOES bolt into the face of the motor.

Thanks.
