I noticed that when I drive for a while, when I stop the car (for whatever reasons), when I restart it after a couples of minutes, I got that @!#$ ticking noise... Look like it's doing it more often, kind of annoying at a stop light when there's someone next to me!! I'm already driving a @!#$can, I don't need people to think my engine is a piece of crap too

But on a serious note, is it common?? Or I'm just unlucky!!!
- I never step on it when the engine is cold
- I change the oil every 5000km (never missed .0001L, I check it once in a while just to be sure)
Since it's still under warranty (2005), I'll send it to the dealer, but I was only wondering if anyone have this trouble!!!
Thanks!!
I also have the valve ticking. It is pretty loud, like you said, at the stoplights, unfortunately I am about 150,000 miles past the warranty. but i kinda just figured it was old and was making old car noises! I just changed the oil not long ago so it can't be that. Hope the dealership finds it. If they do please post so all of us "non warranty" cars can sound better. Thanks
same thing here on my eco...pretty sure everyone has the same ticking sound

Yeah same here. The ECOTEC in my 03 Fire has the same annoying ticking sound. I was kind of concerned myself until I read this post. I feel a lot better now seeing that I'm not the only one, lol. It must just get that way though as it gains miles. When I was working as a car salesman we got an 05 Fire on the lot with 30k miles and it had a smooth quiet sound to it like mine did when I first got it. Mine gradually got more noticable when I hit the 50k mile range. These days it drives me nuts, but I notice it doesn't make the notice as much once it's warmed up. It's louder when I first start it up.

there's some old saying "a noisy valve is a working valve"
but mine does it too.. .i'm not much for old addages, but apparently its as normal as the getrag noise
ill ditto all the above...my 04 does the same thing. not really noticeable unless the hood is up and the engine is cold...however..i have noticed it makes a couple quick "noises" when i turn the engine off...kinda like it deisels for about 3 rotations after i turn it off...again only really moticeable if the hood is up and the ingine is on the colder side. anyone else have that goin on?

my eco seemed to diesel a few times over the winter when i shut it off. never paid much attention to it and hasn't done it to me since its warmed up a bit..
Silly ricer, useless wings are for penguins.
wow...all the responces in this thread make me feel alot better...mine does it too...but mainly when the motor is cold...never noticed it when the engine is at operating temp....
I noticed that most of you were saying that the valve ticking noise happened mainly when the engine was cold........................mine doesn't tick when it's cold but once it warms up it only happens at 2000-3000 rpm AND it's only when I am lifting my foot OFF of the gas pedal...................It's so annoying I turn the stereo up just to bear driving it............it's not a loud ticking but just annoying. I put in some "valve ticking" eliminator stuff in the crankcase, the can said it will work in 10 mins...............it didn't work.
I even tried an engine flush........didn't work.....................I am starting to think that the only way to fix it is to change the valves. Any thoughts on how much this would cost for a 2.4L??
Thanks
Robert
My 2.2 Eco in my HHR ticks around 2200 rpms...Mine is also only when I let off. Mine sounds more like piston slap than valves though. IMO

i got the same problem but it only ticks when its cold. I dont hear it when the car is warm, i feel better now knowing all of em do it cold. I figured it was normal but now i feel even better about it! btw mines an 04 cavi with 40,000 miles on it only done one oil change so far...had it almost 2 months
This ''problem'' wasn't there before, it started since 1 or 2 month(s) It's ticking enough for the driver next to me to notice it!!! I already have a trouble on my car (I lost 1 second on the 1/4 mile.... in the 16s instead of low 15s)
losing 1 second can be anything though. and the ticking is normal unless its CRAZY loud.
I have a 2004 Cavalier w/2.2litre Ecotech and it has 34,000 miles on it. I do drive it pretty hard but im religious about changing the oil and making sure that all fluids are at proper levels. I notice I have pretty bad valve tap now that ive accidently misshifted from 3rd to 2nd while racing, this threw my motor into extremely high rpm and thats when all of this started happening. Im guessing either a rocker arm or something has been screwed up. I have an appointment to get it looked at by my local dealership soon. But I do notice that its pretty loud and noticable ALL of the time no matter what.
Now... it may very well be the injectors, but I know the 2200 has piston slap, and some people could mistake that noise for the valvetrain. Just wondering if the ecotec has any issues with piston slap? Because a lot of people saying it does this when it's cold makes sense, as the pistons haven't expanded yet from the heat and are smacking around a bit.... Much more noticeable in the winter when it's really cold compared to the summer.
Just a thought.
There will always be someone faster than you, but thousands slower and dumber than you.
My ticking must have been pinging because it went away with a couple of tankfuls of a higher grade of gas than what the Ecotec uses and was primarily during cold weather.

Hmm...have your timing chain looked at. I have the SAME problem. 15.6 last year to the 16.8 this year. The car just had the issue Monday. Stopped home for a minute and when I went to start the car again it cranked but wouldn't fire. No compression. Its getting torn apart right now. I'll keep you up to date.
Please tell me the ECO is non-interference...
...I've heard the tick, but mainly when cold, so I just keep the RPMs under 3500 until it's warmed up. I assume hydraulic assist lifters have to be treated like hydraulic lifters.
My Civic made less noises and it was 150,000 miles and trashed from an accident...
