Car starts then dies immediately
Saturday, March 17, 2007 7:27 AM
hey guys to start im driving a 96 2.2 sunfire. I drive the car the everyday and have never had any issues, when i went to start my car the other day it started and died.. The rpm's increase after the start up to about 1500 (this is normal for me), then the car just dies. there is no bogging or anything it just shuts off. If i give the car throttle the rpm's shoot-up and then the car just dies. The car only runs for approxiametly 1 second and then dies. So far ive checked all the battery and ground connections. any suggestions? PS after my car dies the battery light stays on solid along with a 3 or 4 flashes from theftlock which then stays on solid.

Thanks..

I have tried another key and it didn't make any difference. I can hear my fuel pump come on and then stay on right after my car dies. Battery is about 1 year old, but has good voltage its 12.2 currently.

ya its the theftlock. start it, let it die, then let is sit there for 10 - 15 mins. the light will go off or start blinking or sometimes do nothing. Turn the key back after 10-15 mins and then start it up. will start fine.

its exactly 10 minutes and it will flash the whole time, then at 10 minutes it will stay on solid. If its flashing 4-5 times then staying on solid, then there is something wrong with teh theftlock system, happened to mine once i accidently unplugged the bypass for my remote starter

*update*

I got my car running, it turns out my car likes to die if i have my tilt steering to low, if i raise it up the car stays running i can even adjust it to a lower position. I guess its time to look for some shorts...

your passlock wires are probally getting pinched in the low position.

This picture shows the PASSLOCK 1 wires, the YELLOW (+) or will show 1 to 6 Volts DC on a Volt/Ohm Meter) BLACK (-) and WHITE (WHITE wire is NOT USED!!). These wires are shown as they leave the IGNITION SWITCH TUMBLER under the Steering Column of the vehicle.

This is another view from a different angle that shows the PASSLOCK 1 wires, the YELLOW (+) or will show 1 to 6 Volts DC on a Volt/Ohm Meter) BLACK (-) and WHITE (WHITE wire is NOT USED!!). These wires are shown as they leave the IGNITION SWITCH TUMBLER under the Steering Column of the vehicle.

well you only need 4 things to run, air, fuel, spark, and compression....by the sounds of it, you are probably loosing spark or fuel....without loking at it, I cant tell you anything for sure. Do you have an aftermarket alarm, or was there one on it before that could be doing something similar? It really sounds like some kind of theft system issue, probably cutting spark. Whether it is the factory theft lock, or an aftermarket system that you might have NO KNOWLEDGE of even existing. I am strictly speculating though,.....

I would check and find out which thing you are loosing...spark, fuel, or other.

the car has no alarm system at all....that i know of. the keyless entry didn't have any option for an alarm or anything.

my theft system and service light would come on and my gas gauge would drop to E but if I let it sit for about 10 minutes and tried to start it again it would go.
