Being a newer GM vehicle I have a question concerning fluids in the car. Is there any fluid in the car, including power steering and coolant, that is NOT compatible with aftermarket fluids? My steering reservoir is a little low and I don't want to put a non-compatible fluid in it, but I don't want to pay $9 a quart for the GM stuff, either.
dexcool doesnt like anything but dexcool, and if its a isuzu manual trans, then dont dare put anything but synchromesh in it.

" My steering reservoir is a little low and I don't want to put a non-compatible fluid in it, but I don't want to pay $9 a quart for the GM stuff, either." For power steering fluid just use the DII or DIII (Dexron 2 or 3) as stated in the owners manual or on the power steering cap, any brand wiil do .
you do realize that dexron is atf? there is no way it will cost you $9/qt. and yes, you can use dexron 3 in your power steering.

atf fluid will only cost you $9 at the rip off gas station, Well Lawrence, you got 2004 cavalier? automatic?. Aftermarket power steering fluid will work you, Just make sure it says SAE approved by General motors. Now if youre wanting to change youre automatic transmission fluid and filter, Make sure you use Dexron IIE or III (ATF) automatic fluid. Of course only use dexcool coolant for youre cooling system, Mix dexcool with Green anti freeze will not work, Its a Big No....No.
Good Luck.
Sorry, I thought I had specified the transmission in my bio. I have a manual.
As for the power steering fluid, the manual only specifies GM power steering fluid, which has a different part number than any Dexron carried from GM. I tried asking the dealer but got the standard "use only GM stuff" B.S. At Hall Chevrolet in Chesapeake, VA (where I buy all of my OEM parts) my discounted price is about $9 a quart for the GM fluid specified in the manual. I ended up topping off with NAPA brand fluid, which says it's compatlible with all power steering systems, including GM. So far I've had no problems.
BTW: Dexron at the dealer is about $7 a quart, not just "at the rip off gas station".
