problem in reverse

in my 98 sunfire gt 5 speed when i go in reverse it does fine untill i let off the gas then it makes a really bad sound ....it sounds like a high pitch grinding and a clunking sound...... any one have a idea what it is

mine does this to, but mine is a brand new trans, and the trans shop told me nothing to worry about, but I dont beleive them.

do you have any idea what it is i put mine up on jack stands and looked at it while a buddy let it go in reverse and couldnt see any thing that was hitting or any thing like that

I have no idea, my trans is still under warranty, and they dont want to honor the warranty, they said if they took the trans down, opened it up, and nothing was wrong, I would have to pay labor for taking the trans out.

I kinda have problems like that too, except when accelerating hard in reverse it just pops out of gear, even if I have my hand holding the stick into reverse. I get the loud sound too but I'm sure its just from it coming out of gear without the clutch in

Check your transmission mount. There is a mount that comes extremely close to the driver's side. There is a metal bracket piece that can bend and will act like a ratchet on your inner CV boot clamp. This happened to me and I couldn't here it going forward, but when in reverse the thing would catch on the CV boot clamp and make a nasty clunking sound. Probably not a common thing, but it happened to me and I only figured out after going through two new halfshafts You can't see it unless you know where to look (and pull the wheel off).
