The 2.2L, the reliabilty how does it hold up to you guys with mine mine's a 95 2.2 OHV and it's past 200K mark always going back and fourth to work which is
about 30 miles everyday. I change my oil every 2500 miles due to the fact just to reduce friction and i use castrol anti sludge motor oil 5w-30. I just wanted to
know how your 2.2 been treating you.
My 2.2L ' 97 Cavy is coming up on 100k miles, with a lot of short tripping and in-town travelling. No engine-related problems, except that in the past 10k or so I've noticed more of a "ticking" noise under acceleration especially when it's hot.

My 2.2ohv treats me pretty nice I suppose. I currently have no "engine" related issues, except a slight ticking. It may be the oil I put in it though, I'm coming up on 3k miles so I need to change it out anyway. The only actual problems I've had so far with my car is I recently had to change the fuel pump, and the starter, but those aren't engine related now are they.
I'm rolling up on 90k miles on my 02. So I guess I don't have a "ton" of mileage.

Ive got 2001 2.2L cavalier 156,750 km's runs really well, Ive done all the preventive maintance, Oil changes 5,000 kms, Tranny Filter & oil changed, Tune up / fuel filter changed / Air filter / Coolant flush & thermostat. Ive had the car for 2 years feb.15, I bought it used at 113,000 kms. I cant complain, Its been a really good car, Oh of course new set of front rotors & pads. She still running strong.
i got 131k on mine and i drive it every where. i change the oil every 3k with 10w-30 and ive never heard any problems.
I have in the family a 96 2.2 and a 97 2.2, both with over 350000 km on them. Both have had the head gaskets done, both have had the water pumps go, the 97 timing chain tensioner broke/wore right through, I have also replaced a starter and an alternator (don't recall right now which). The 96 suffered from a missfire/stalling prblem that turned out to be a bad wire splice on the main engine harness for the injectors. The 96 also had a #4 injector leak.
Just passed 191K miles. Had the water and oil pumps replaced @ 100K, 'just in case'. Had a buddy help with the head gasket (STUPID GM assembly!!!!) this past spring. Rear bearing seal a while ago. Still has near-new compression, not 'burning' any oil. Starts right up every time. Getting about 33/34 mpg highway. I treat it with civility for the most part, wind it out about once a week once warmed up. Oil & filter every 3K with 10w-30.
I have about 218 000 km on my 96 cavalier and it never let me down.
It always starts, even in the coldest Canadian winters we have and I've never plugged it in once.
I've always used synthetic oil in her and do regular oil changes every 5000 km.
So all in all, I have no complaints

i had a 99 sunfire 2.2, got it with 15 miles, put 115,000 miles on it. all i ever needed to replace (engine parts) was a battery and an o2 sensor. i now have an 04 ecotec with 83,000 miles, got it wth 17 miles on it, have had to replace nothing so far...

I have a 1998 Cavalier 2.2L, shes going past 210 000 kms right now and still running strong. Definitely a reliable car after I flipped mine going 67 km/h.
Just the little nicks and nacks of the 2.2L. She's a real s#!t kicker, that's for sure. Well, say. If your water pump and timing belt go on a 2.4..urrghh. Where as a 2.2 the job seems a little more plausible.
-BAD MOTOR MOUNTS-
I don't know but was it something with the 95-99's where the motor mounts wern't really noted for having any amount of life longevity?
CONCLUSION: Damn good car, reliable.
mines been great so far, 47k on it almost ... but about to go into somewhat uncharted territory with asking for 12's out of it eventually
2.2 OHV's were originally made for the reliability aspect where as the 2.4's were built for the performance aspect.
160,000miles, If you have not done an engine overhaul you''l probably need it later. I changed the rear main seal at 140,000 w/ new clutch, front seal and serpentine belt w/ tensioner. New catylic converter, changed the fuel filter every 5,000 miles and added fuel cleaner at the same time, Checked oil every week and topped off ass needed, changed spark plugs every year, changed plug wires every 2 years, changed air cleaner (intake) every 3 months. I only major problems I ever run into is that damn crank positioning sensor, they go bad every 6-12 months or so, as well as the camshaft positioning sensor (some are defective from major parts stores, but are relatively cheap. All in all my car never had died out completely, maybe just sputtering when those sensors go bad. Carry extra sensors with you in the car just in case. If need be you can actually install it in 10 minutes when raising the vehicle.
oh yeah that ticking noise is the timming chain, 2.2 OHV's tick when their old, simply replace it with a new timming chain and adjuster/tensioner. You have to remove the pulley and cover, you'll need the timing chain cover gasket set with front seal. Rent all the tools for free at Advance auto parts, you'll need a friend to hold the flywheel when removing the pulley or installing it.
My sister has 201k miles on her '99 Sunfire 2.2...she's had the headgasket replaced and the alternator. She got the car with under 20k miles...I'd say they're pretty reliable. Recently, her mechanic said, "Don't sell 'er just yet, she's got a lot of life left." I can't really say that my sister maintains the car very well though. No ticks, just a smooth running engine. We're looking forward to seeing 300k miles
i have a 97 cav 2.2 with 224000 kms still runs great only major promblems were the headgasket and water pump going and i bought the car with a warranty so i didnt pay for those things
SWEET deal getting that stuff fixed for 'free'!! If done at a GM place, they most likely adjusted the cause of the head gasket failure. If not, you may be in for another gasket in a few years. They should have turned one, or both, guide pins for the head.
My 96 cavy is about to hit the 200k mark only probs so far was bad water pump alt and re-torquing the rocker arms (was getting REALLY loud turns out it was a stud that was half way broken through. ) other than that its a great car.

i had a 99 sunfire w/ the 2200/2.2 in it. bought it with 18 miles, traded it in with 155,000. only things i replaced was the battery and o2 sensor, and i beat it like it stole from me. of course, it got all the proper maintenance and i used synthetic oil in in from day 1...

Mu 1990 Cavi has 116,000 miles. There are some challenges that I am working on... but it has no computer codes just maintenance stuff that the previoous owner didn't want to fix.
According to my mechanic, I need to:
Replace my radiator
Replace the IAC motor
Replace (2) ignition coils
I am so new that none of this makes a lot of sense yet... But I own a Haynes manual, so I got a shot at this.
Wish me luck....
These repairs are not that difficult for the average weekend wrencher, and are not uncommon maintenance. A little involved maybe, but by no means very technical. Try cleaning off the OE IAC motor first, could be just all the carbon build-up. And, clean out the bore it's in of the throttle body. While you have the coolant out for the radiator repair, it'd be a good time to replace the water pump and all the hoses as well as the thermostat. Ignition coils are a good call. Try new wires as well. Old wires will lead to frying the new coils, should their resistance be up from wear-and-tear. If some of this stuff was done already, like at the 100K mile mark, then you may not need to do the extra work. If not done, then a little effort now will save you big headaches down the road.
1996 cav with 107,000 miles on it. some starting issues, otherwise engine seems strong
2001 sunfire, with 103,000 miles on it. starts 95% of the time almost instantly... I almost want it to die so I can get a new car, but at this rate it will be awhile before that happens.
I had a 2002 w/ the 2.2L OHV before I wrecked it... I used Mobil 1 synthetic in it from day 1 and 70k hard miles later it was still running without a hitch...

what was the problem with the guide pins, i never heared that before? just wondering.
i have a 2000 cavalier 2.2, its just turned over 92K. i run Mobil 1 synthetic just because i drive so much i dont feel like doing an oil change every month, i change it about every 5000 miles. the only problems i have had with mine is the post cat o2 sensor acting up, the idler pully is making a little noise, a little bit of ticking when its cold, i had to clean the coil towers on one coil because it started to rust a little and it was giving me some poor preformance. but othere then that its been a good car. i picked it up aug 05 with 48k miles on it. iam in germany so i drive 65 miles every day on the autobahn between 80 to 100mph and no major problems.
189,000 on the old one and 92,000 on the new one. there wasnt anything wrong with the first one. but my tranny blew and i decided to just replace all of it. but. shees still running strong.
