So ive had this car for a year or so and i know that its a junkyard motor from the wonderful yellow id numbers on the timing chain housing.....but i can not for the life of me figure out why it is losing oil.....there are NEVER any leaks in the driveway or where ever it is parked, you can smell oil burning every once in a while and at night you can see a slight smoke every once in a while , but when you lift the hood it is never to be found where exactly it is coming from...... I have tightened all the valve cover bolts, head bolts, oil pan and it still does the same crap.....i just made a 1200 mile trip with her and she performed beautifully, but now that im down here i went to check oil just to be sure and once again LOW, considerably.....any ideas to the cause of this or solutions for my problem would be greatly appreciated and thank you

If you have looked underneath your car and seen no leaks it could be two other options. The valve seats are leaking oil into the combustion chamber or oil is blowing past the piston oil consumption rings.
If you perform a cylinder wet compression test it should help to tell of the oil consumption rings are starting to wear. After that fixing the car should be easy.
