Power Window Help Needed
Saturday, November 18, 2006 6:57 AM
I have an 88 Sunbird Convt. and the right power window does not work. Its been back and forth in the shop for 3 weeks now and my mechanic said the motor works but it was the switch cause both wires on the motor are reading positive and u have to ground out one wire to roll down and the other to roll up. They replaced both door switches with new ones and still don't work. They can't figure it out and they want me to bring my car there friday morning so they can check it again. I bought a switch and the wire thing it plugs into at junkyard out of a gmc jimmy. It was the exact same only difference was the one out of my car was black and the one on the jimmy was clear. They still got it connected but a brand new switch on it now. Could that thing be the problem or is it something in my wiring?

Looking at my '92and earlier diagram, with Master and individual door motor switches, at rest, both sides of the window motors are grounded by the individual and master switch contacts.

They said and u have to ground out one wire to roll down and the other to roll up.]

This is not true, both sides of the motor are grounded "at rest" and you have to break one side and switch it to +12volts, i.e. the ground should already be there.

When, say the Master,Right, Front is selected DOWN the switch contacts change over, remove the ground from that side of the motor and apply +12 volts from the window circuit breaker,as the other side is already grounded the motor should run .

The only ways I see to have +12 volts on both sides of the motor are:-

1 It's wired incorrectly

2. The Right Front Master switch contact is stuck/boken (say the UP) and supplies +12 volts AT THE SAME time as the Right front DOWN window switch contact is also stuck/broken and is supplied +12 volts from it's (PINK maybe) wire at the window switch onthe door.

3. The BLACK wire which provides a ground connection to the MASTER door switch is not grounded AND one door switch is defective.

If I had to trace this I would disconnect the MASTER switch and test between the grounded contact (where the ground wire plugs in) and all other connections. I would expect continuity except where the window circit breaker connects, which should read open/infinity.This would test all four door outlets to ensure they are grounded "at rest".
Then test from the "power in" (PINK wire) connection to the eight up/down contacts, making and breaking the switches as appropriate, this would check +12 volt is supplied, then switched off as required.
Finally, each door switch would have to be tested, then, if all is good so far it will be in the wiring.

Maybe this might help
