P0171 - flashing dashboard lights?
Saturday, September 30, 2006 2:49 AM
Okay, I've done some searching and I found other people who had similar problems to me but their solutions have not worked thus far for me. My car is a '98 5 speed cavalier with over 130K on it. It seems to lose and gain power sporadically, and the engine code that comes up is DTC P0171 (Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 1). It started to throw this code only when I used my cruise control, now it's coming on without. My dashboard lights up like a Christmas tree but very briefly, often flashing a few times before stopping. Both symptoms usually go away within a few seconds of starting. I have a K&N cold air intake on the engine but that's it for internal mods.

My questions are: Has anyone else who has had this problem had their dashboard lights act up like this? And does it mean anything? (the lights I've seen flash are the seat belt, e-brake and anti-lock brakes.)

So far I've tried replacing the fuel filter, O2 sensor, spark plugs and cleaning the IAC valve. Today I'm going to try changing the MAP sensor but a friend tells me it's probably the fuel pump. I'm really hoping he's wrong because that would be expensive.

If the map sensor doesn't do the trick, I've got a short list of things I might consider, like the IAT sensor and throttle position sensor however I have not researched these parts yet or their functions or their cost.

Any advice is welcome. The other threads I've read regarding this problem often refer to the symptom as hesitation. It just feels like lugging to me, and that sounds like the same thing but maybe I'm wrong.

I had that code (P0171) about 2 months ago. I also replace the O2 sensor and check the map sensor, but the code return. Finally, I just went ahead and replaced the fuel pump. Haven't had that problem since. I have a 96 cav.

I would take a look at the sensors wiring harnesses for splices, And vaccum hoses as well, Before you replace the fuel pump get the pressure test done, No point wasting youre hard earned cash, I would also take a look at youre Coil packs, Also youre cars charging system alternator, Make sure you gone proper charge happening.

Good Luck

Thanks NCK and rich. I'm going to get those checked out and, if all else fails, I think I'll finally cave and try the fuel pump.
