I'm working on a friend's 1997 Cavalier to help her pass state inspection. Just recently, she said that the high beams don't work. I had her bring it over to my house so I could inspect it. I promptly noticed the DRL light flashing on the dash. Chalked the rear wheels, started the car and put it into 1st gear and got out to look at the headlights. The DRL where not working. Checked the Haynes manual and discovered that it might be the relay in the front of the car. Changed that and now she has DRL, but still no headlights at all when the high beams are commanded. I'm pretty sure it's the DRL module in the cluster, but not sure.
When I turn the headlights, the low beams work (harness gets 13.3v). I tested the high beams harness and with the DRL working, the high beams get something REALLY low like .5v, but with the headlights on and the high beams commanded, it gets NOTHING ... no power what so ever. Once this is done, the DRL will not work again until you turn off the car and turn it back on and put it into drive (automatic trans). This is why I suspect the DRL module.
I need help ... it's mid month and she needs to pass inspection. Has anyone seen this happen? Do you think I could simply bypass the DRL? How would I go about doing that?
Thanks in advance for you help!!!
Just thought that I would clarify the situation with a brief description of the problem:
1) When the headlights are turned to the ON position via the headlight stalk, the low beams work just fine.
2) After replacing the DRL relay, the Daytime Running Lights work just fine.
3) Regardless if DRL or low beams are on, when commanding the Hi Beams, all headlights go out.
4) The DRL light on the Dash & the Hi Beam indicator on the dash both work.
5) After trying to turn on the Hi Beams, the DRL light flashes constantly until restart.
check to see if there are any blown fuses in the interior fuse panel. That could result in the really low voltage problem and why they wouldnt work but the DRL would.

2009 Ford Mustang V6
Not a fuse issue ... that is how the DRL work ... they send low voltage to the high beams. How much voltage it's supposed to send, I don't know ... my point of posting that is that the wires where tested and it does flow voltage, so I don't suspect the wiring harness.
Sounds like a Headlight switch to me! Most of the time the low beams go out.
I had this problem when I blew a fuse doing the 00-02 swap.
sounds dumb, but it was the case. Just replaced the fuse, cut the DRLs, and ta-da!
but now my headlight switch is starting to trip on me, so here goes more money I don't have down the drain
...
If You looked at the hanyes man. be careful the pic shows both cav and sunfire at the same time running lights and fog etc ... have both head lights been replaced? might be the wrong ones? DRL Module? (Bcm?)
Ok theres your fuse box : L . HDLP - R. HDLP next is the DRL relay which you already replaced and the Dtimes are working...after that is the head lamps and then your turn/hazard headlamp switch assembly with one switch that does lo -high and day and then ends with a ground and the other in the same case is flash to pass ending with a ground those two switchs are connected in the high beam setting so there two chances that one switch is worn out melted or broke off .... might even be a bad ground ..rust, loose .....does the hi beam light come on even if the high beams don't? if not thats what your looking for (Switch assembly)
other than that Bcm mod ...but i never heard of them failing .....
Hope it helps ..let us know

what he says is very common with our J's
Just starting to look through these threads and just want to make sure I am having the same problem.
My problem does not happen all the time but getting more and more regular, I have no low beam on my 97 Sunfire.
however after running for while the low beam starts working again until the next day when I start it cold I have no low
beam again. Is there a dimmer switch in this baby? has anyone encountered this problem?
Thanks
