I have a 98 with a 2.4 with the 4T40 trany. ON friday I was driving an hour at 60 mph and stopped for one hour. After that stop I was driving for 30 minutes stopped for a signal light and when I accerated I found I only had one gear. First gear was all the tranny had and gave no indication that it wanted to shift.
I drove 30 miles this way on the shoulder of the road. I stopped to take a short break wondering what was wrong with my transmission. After 15 minutes I started on my journey home and the tranny worked perfectly.
Does anyone have any idea what happened?
It was a 80 degree day. Could it be a fluid level problem or a fluid pump issue? Can it be fixed with out a rebuild?
The tranny didn't slip or shift badly before or after this incident.

I thought I was in the transmission forum but I guess not.
