Just today I noticed that my hvac control (the far right hand side one) which controls the defrost, direction or air (feet, head), etc. is no longer working. For example, if I want to put it on defrost, it will switch over to that side, but will not stay. It clicks back over to the "head" position. And if I hold my fingers on the defrost position it still wont blow out the top of the dash onto the windshield.
Obviously something came loose or broke on the inside. But any idea what it could be? I pulled out the hvac control box, but couldnt see anything that jumped out at me. Its not a major issue until my windows fog up and then it becomes a PITA.
i am having this exact problem. anyone know the fix? can someone explain how the control works? thanks very much.

I had/have this same problem. I took it to the dealer to have it looked at/repaired. After spending $286

, they said it was working "good as new". In these really cold temps we've been having, the control still sticks and doesn't want to stay in the defrost position. I question whether the dealer actually replaced the cable or not. Does anyone know if there is something that might need to be greased? It feels like I'm going to break the knob off.
The following is the replacement procedure for the mode door cable, in the HVAC box. This is what was wrong with my '03 cavy
The cable gets twisted and frayed as you are trying to switch from face to defrost, thus resulting in the mode door being unable to switch back and forth.
The replacement cable is P/N# 89018243 and can be picked up at any GM Parts counter for $17.54
Good 'ol GM failed to actually update the cable, so make sure when you are putting in the new one you create pleanty of clearance for the cable to move in & out. (Wich could be why your still feeling some resistance.) I'm guessing a little friction lube couldn't hurt either.
Hope this helps!

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Install the cable flag and screw to the HVAC module assembly.
Tighten
Tighten the screw to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

Oh yeah, good luck.......This is not as easy as they make it sound, but it is do-able. I did it, so any questions feel free to ask
would i be able to move the end of the cable attached to the HVAC with pliers so that the air is directed to the windshield instead of face as a temporary fix?
Yes, that's exactly what i did at the start of last winter to get me through, but when it gets hot again your gonna want that A/C back on your face. So then i would pull it into the garage and get it over with.
