Ok a few weeks back i was driving out of walmart very normal not jumping on it or anything and all of a sudden my engine started ticking. It sounded like a lifter noise and not a rod noise so i decided to investigate so i pulled out my engine( i have another car to drive and i wanted to build my engine anyway). so i tear down the top end to get to the lifters and there is nothing, no unusual wear no collapsed lifters no broken springs or messed up cams, nothing it looks perfectly normal. So now me and my dad are stumped on what the noise could have been. I have read other posts on here and everyone seems to not check there oil and that is the problem but i always check my oil and it was full. when the car was running it was a constant tick and the higher the rpms went the louder and faster it got i was about to tear into the bottom end and the rod bearing just to check but i figured i would ask your opinion first. So any help would be much appreciated.

Just a guess maube youre timing chain or the tentioner is wornout.
Hmm.. sounds like a problem with your flux capacitor to me.... Or perhaps make sure your headlight fluid is topped up, that could be it also. Here, you can get a replacement flux capacitor for a fair price from this place:

P.S. This is rather obviously a joke, if you spend $175,000 for a flux capacitor this is entirely your fault and you sir are a moron : ) lol

I'm not sure how to check it, but it certainly won't be easy to replace. I have to do that and I am not looking forward to it. I did it on a Sonoma (same 2.2) and it wasn't bad, but the engine was facing the right direction.
I had same problem about a year ago... was driving and randomly this ticking started happening... checking oil was my first thought... then later found out it was a broken gear in my transmittion... it still drove fine, but made an annoying noise... needless to say... had to have my transmittion rebuilt...
A tapping sound can be caused by an exhaust leak where it to bolts to the head. This will get louder as RPMS go up.

also i checked under the hood with the engine running and it was a top end noise and sounded like it was coming off the exhaust side of the motor so i check for exhaust leaks but there was no carbon anywhere

I'm going with the rod bearing, the lifters on our motor's seem pretty stout from what ive seen. Check # 3 first, and wish for the best. How about your Spark Plugs, have you changed them recently at all? I've had them come loose before, and make a lifter tick typed sound. For giggle's, check them out too. Normally if the ticking increases with engine RPM its said to be a bearing.
So are the bearings a weakspot?

If you pulled the engine right after this happened there wouldn't be much of a leck showing. Most of the time the flex plate just get ripped or worn from the years. Might want to check there to make sure everything was ok there. Also the gasget after the manifold to the downpipe/flexpipe area might of gone bad also.
