Timing chain tensioner plus timing help !!!!!!
Saturday, June 17, 2006 6:35 PM

So I put a brand new cylinder head in my z24 this weekend and im just about done. I was putting on the timing chain and everything seemed to be lined up perfect ! So I manually turned the engine around making sure nothing inside the engine hit. While i was doing this my tensioner went screwed up and chain went loose !!!!

Now my cams are off and need to me properly lined up again
Can someone tell me the easiest way to do this ?

also how do i reset the tensioner properly ??

thanks
Jon

I dont have any real advice for you on this. But I can say you when you reinstall it, if you are off by one tooth your motor is blown.

Yes i do understand this !!

I understand how to line up the crank and the cams, but my problem is knowing what stroke the engine is on, having the 2 cams makes this a little more difficult !

It doesn't mater on witch stroke the engine is. Aling the cam gear hole with the holes in the housing, aling the crank, put the chain on and release the tensioner. Usually you just have to push a bit on the tensionner and let it go.

Its not that simple !!

yes its very easy to take a cam spin it around and line the holes up and put the 8mm bolt it to hold it, but one spin of the crank spins the cams twice

therefore even if you think its all lined up, one or both cams could me a whole turn off !! This is where my problem is therefore it matters what stoke the engine on because you will know what valves need to be open

the #1 cylinder has to be at top dead center (TDC), thats all you need to know. I would assume the cam sensor is what smoothes everything else out as to when the plugs are supposed to fire...

haha it seems you're a noob with those engine. I'm telling you, it doesn't matter. Why do you think you have timming marks? because with those marks you only have to aling them and forget about it. Also, the "one spin of the crank spins the cams twice" Wrong and right at the same time. The crank gear is twice smaller than the cam gear. Even if you look in the haynes manual, Gm manual or any manual, it will say the same thing. Aling the cam gear hole with the hole in the housing(put an M8 bolt in the hole to hold the cam), Aling both mark on the crank gear and the housing and put the chain on.

Plain and simple. Don't try to find something really hard. If you still don't believe me than you are dumb enough not to work on your engine.

I agree with everything your saying and i understand the marks i should have been more clear i guess my problem was I couldnt spin them around because of the pistons in the way when i put it at top dead center, but im all good now i just turned the crank a little soo the pistons were not all ther way at the top then i lined up the cams no prob

thanks for the replies !!!

I should have told you that. Still, at TDC the intake valves are NOT suppose to hit.
