lifter tick after water pump reinstall?
Thursday, June 15, 2006 10:45 AM
I just finished changing my water pump in my 2000 2.4 a few weeks ago, and started up the car to hear the nice sweet sound again. After driving it for a while my lifter started to tick. I changed the oil, started it up... it made a sound like keys in the dryer for 2 seconds and then nothing. It sounded great! After I drive for a while, or whenever it feels like it, the sound persists. It seems to not have the power it used to at the high RPMs. Anyone have any ideas as to what I can do? Thanks in advance!

First off I dont see how your water pump install can make a lifter start ticking, infact it cant.

Secondly anytime people hear their car tick just once they think "oh has to be the lifters", just because they read on the internet that ticking is always lfiters. Tell you the truth I doubt unless you have really high mileage it is your lifters ticking, it is most likely misdiagnosed.

well okay question sorry to go off topic, well my car is ticking at 17000 well after a 50 shot of nitrous use....but anyways the car has to be warm at running temp, and from 1000-2000 rpms it will tick...and if you turn the car off and turn it back on while its still warm it will tick tick tick and then stop.

Im thinking the Nitrous broke something, its hard to say, as it goes away, i would check spark plugs, they can make a tick if loose.

Is it possible that you might be off a tooth in your timing? Im thinking the tick is possible valve/pistion touching... hope not, but worth a shot?

I guess would be you got something worng with youre lifters or push rods. Usually if NOS is used on a stock motor enough times you will notice engine noise occuring, Cause a few of my friends had the same problems, Few months back he fried his cyl head, From having a valve problem, NOS can be used with no problems, In time a fully modded motor could fail. Stock parts can only handle so much. I would look into youre lifters or push rods, That should correct youre troubles.

Good Luck.

Forgive me for sounding stupid here. But I didnt think our cars had push rods, I though the Ecotecs used the fulcum followers cam set-up.

i would say it isnt a lifter problem and if your piston is hitting valves you would pretty much know !! Just for fun do a compression test accross the cylinders
and see what you come up with

after i put my timing chain on i always turn the engine around a few times by the crank bolt to see if anything hits if something does then you wont be able to turn it !

But about the ticking, take a metal bar and put it on the cam housings
and then to your ear see if you can hear where the ticking is coming from exactly. who knows maybe a lifter is screwed!

also check the sound around the chain housing area, maybe you tensioner is going !

Hope this helps!

I'm sure I caused it after the install... I ended up taking the chain off, any suggestions as to what it is?

has anyone ever thought to check your timing chain tensioners???? GM's hydraulic tensioners have been known to be pieces of @!#$. best bet is prolly to get a spring loaded timing chain tensioner, prolly round 25 bux at advanced
