A while ago, my head unit kept turning off and on and eventually the whole car went dead because of the alternator. This happened about 3-4 months ago and ever since I got the new alternator from Advanced Auto Parts the car has been running fine until now. Today, I turned on the car and hit play on my mp3 player and the volume was somewhat high. Then, my head unit turned off and then turned back on as if it was resetting or something. Right after that happened, I was pulling out of the parking lot and it did it again. I don't know what seems to be the problem. Hope you guys can help me.

Is it an aftermarket unit or factory? It could be a wire in the harness touching metal on metal causing an intermittant short small enough not to blow the fuse? Is it just your radio cutting in and out or is it the dash and everything?

it's an aftermarket unit and from what i've seen it is just the head unit that keeps cutting in and out.

My guess youre ground wire is acting up, on youre head units wiring harness.
Or it could be that when you turned on the H/U with the volume up too high it may have caused the internal protection to freak out a little... Does it do it at all volume levels or just at the higher level?
It does it when the volume is high. It has happened three times already and when I lower the volume it doesn't turn off and on; however, I haven't had time to see if lowering the volume actually prevents it from turning on and off. When I replaced the alternator 3-4 months ago, I've had the headunit at high volumes and not once did it turn off on its own.

Are the factory speakers in the vehicle? if so there is a possibility that one of the speakers is blown. The amp in the radio is stable at 4 ohms and if a speaker is blown it will drop the ohm load resulting the radio cutting out or shutting off. So I would check the speakers in the car and then go from there. But most likely it is a blown speaker. Good luck.

When my stereo blinks like that it usually means that my charging circuit is screwed up. I'm having all sorts of recurring problems in my electrical system and my fusible link to the starter will has an intermittent connection for the few weeks before it completely blows. When it's disconnected, all the accessories are running off the batt and when it drops below something like 10.5V, my deck cuts out. (at least this is what I THINK is happening, my car's still a mess). It usually is only for a second or so before everything gets back in place and the V comes back up.
I haven't had a chance to test out anything because I let my brother borrow my car until his car gets fixed. Tim Summers I also thought maybe there might be problems in my eletrical system, but my stereo doesn't blink it just turns off then it comes back on, as if someone turned off the head unit then turned it back on. Another thing to add to my problem, all my radio presets have been resetted and the time display is changed as well.
