It looks like high $$$ gasoline is here to stay. Are there any methods to improve the MPG on my 2.4L Cavalier? I don't want to rebuild the engine or anything like that. I am thinking of a new EPROM or something like that.
Thanks!
Make sure your tires are inflated properly and have a clean air filter and free flowing exhaust. This makes a big difference.

Add 4 oz of acetone to your fuel per 10 gallons.
I do the first two. By free flowing exhaust do you mean headers of some kind with factory pipes?
High flow exhaust = A full exhaust setup -- header, highflow cat and muffler, anything but crush bent tubing (manderel preferred)...
I tried the acetone in my fuel. It didn't make any difference for my car. Too bad for me.

HUH? did you only try it once? Cause i get about 100 Extra miles on a tank. You have to do it a few times to reap the full benifts.
Yeah, I tried it for about three or four tanks, no difference. I already got 32-33 mpg when I was trying it out. What was your before and after mpg?

didnt do much for me either except mess up my gas gauge
That sticky is common sense, and does not consider modifications.
i just changed to castrol gtx and it appears that i'm getting slightly better gas mileage. i also changed the valve cover gasket and i think that solved a little problem too. i already have a freeflowing exhaust (headers, free cat, and flowmaster 40). i was getting maybe 25 mpg before changing the oils and now i get close to 30.

Yet that is the best way to save fuel, follow it and you will get a return. Lastly, modifications does not ALWAYS give you improved efficiency. But common sense should have told you that by now.

I've used acetone with fairly good results. This was in a older Astro van which never had good milage. I've read some info on acetone and found less is more. I usually run 2 oz per 10 gallon. I've read if you go above that, it loses its effect. Then again, who can believe what they read on the internet?

By exhaust I mean header high flow cat and increased diameter pipeing. Take for example my set up, my 04 Cavi has the Pacesetter header, Magna flow cat and 2 dynomax mufflers, all are 2 1/2 inch pipeing. I'm also running the INJEN intake and I'm getting right around 40 mpg average. Thats right over 450 miles to a tank of gas. And it also runs 14's

tell me I'm not loveing life !

IM getting 590km on 44L with my 2.4L cavalier..Im very happy with that compared to what my s10 was getting
I use Lucas UCL and see at least 5% consistent increase in fuel mileage. Three ounces to 10 gal of gas. I will get 2-3 mpg better running Lucas. Also I put 35 psi in the tires instead of 30. The car handles better (stock tires and wheels). Understeer doesn't seem so bad.
God bless America.

=31.54 mpg
Is that average or highway only.
I am getting about 27 mpg average and 32 when cruising on the hiway.
My original question was to find out if that can be improved.
I saw on TV yesterday that rear spoilers can increase drag (makes sense) and that you can imprive mpg by taking them off.
lso, I am using Mobil 1 synthetic oil.
Ya I think im getting like 16mpg in my 98z24. New air filter, tires are proper, i try and shift before or at 2k. Put some injector cleaner in last nite. Bought a fuel filter, but havnt put that on. my cars got 119k. Any ideas? Im hoping the gauge is just messed up.
Wolf that would depend on the spoiler. If its just that lip that our cars come with stock then no it ain't hurting anything. But it your sporting one of those big 747 style things that sits at a 45degree angle then that will hurt you.

Here's something that I haven't read in this thread... Keep extra junk out of your trunk. Extra weight hurts mileage. I also coast between shifts when the tank is low.

And I have a neighbor who sleeps really sound and owns an SUV. He hasn't missed the 5 gallons per week I've taken every week since he's bought it.
