Help, Service Engine, ABS, and Trac Off light
Friday, April 07, 2006 1:17 AM
About a month or two ago, the Service Engine, ABS and Trac Off lights were going off on my 04 sunfire, took it to auto zone, they plugged into it and said they couldnt see any problem, so i took it back to the dealorship, they said that my wiring harness was bad and needed to be replaced, charged me 300 bucks to replace it, now about a month later its doing it again, any ideas on what the problem could be?

Did you check to see if you had any recalls?

come to think of it, when they replaced the wiring harness, they said they also replaced some of piece that was a recalled but that I didn't need to worry about it cause they took care of it.

sounds to me like it could be an ABS sensor, or the module itself...or something of that nature. have someone competent scan the computer next time

i kno there is a recall where they add a relay to the starter system... because sometimes it can overheat the wiring in the steering column, or something like that... called "thermal events" or some crap like that...

i'm a GM technician...

My car had that same problem when it was under warranty and now the same problem out of warranty. It's a front wheel speed sensor that's gone bad. Mine comes on when I go from Reverse to Drive and sometimes when I'm not even moving. Try those things out, I think the sensors are like $80.

alot of times its just a broken wire not the sensor itself. check that first

Yup they are right its the abs sensor, or something along those lines, wire, sensor itself, mine has the same thing, insurance is picking mine up or id snag it for you. Oh and you got ripped off on the new harness for $300 you probably didnt need.

my girlfriend's car just started doing this, should i expect to replace a speed sensor? any way to tell if it is the right or the left? in my situation, the abs acts up and makes its noise immediately before the lights go on.. any ideas?

so i had looked around, and figured i would clean the connector on each wheel, (was told its the speed sensors, but also help the abs, so I'm thinking it is an abs sensor?)..
car is still doing it, even if it sits stil running for a few minutes, it will sometimes come on.. I cleaned the connector at each wheel, and put dialectric grease on them... any other thoughts? I dont know where to go from here?

I had the same problem and I just cleanned up the sensors. They were full of dirt and the problems desappear. Try cleaning the sensors carefully. Clean the speed sensor teeth too.
