i need advice...
Thursday, March 30, 2006 2:04 PM
just wondering what i should do, its about to become summer, and this will be the first summer that i have had my cavy. im going to change spark plugs, the oil, and radiator coolant. What i wanted to know was, i read somewhere that its a good idea to flush ur system. I guess that means cleaning it befor eputting any more stuff in. So how would i go about cleaning the radiator coolant? and engine oil tank? is there anything special that i need? and also how much radiator coolant am i looking at here?

dont flush the engine. you can buy some radiator flush i believe you dump it in and drive for like a week and then drain it all and refill it. You will need probably one gallon o dexcool coolant and mix it 50/50 which will make 2 gallons it should almost use it all.

Don't flush the engine or trans, just the coolant. Use the normal "green" coolant,
don't go back with that crappy dex-cool it's trouble. I think our cars take something like 12 quarts, mix it 50/50 with water and re-fill. Plugs/wires/air filter/fuel filter and if you have an auto change the fluid/filter there too.

The backflush kit from Prestone works well. And yes, Dex-Cool IS OK! After you run with the flush fluid, drain coolant, install kit ('T' connector in the heater hose), run cool water for 10 minutes, THEN add Dex-Cool. One gallon of Dex will make about a 60-70% mixture in favor of Dex. Check with the capacity table in the owners manual. If used in a clean system, Dex-Cool will not foul you. I have 180K miles of proof in the driveway. As for the engine, pour a can of Seafoam in the oil filler tube and drive around for a week. Change oil as normal, but let it drain for a little longer. A can of Seafoam in the fuel tank will take care of the fuel system. What car/engine do you have, anyway?
