Dead 94 3.1 ltr Cav Conv

I have a 1994 Chevy Cavalier Convertible with a 3.1 Liter V-6 Multiport fuel injection engine. Over a 10 day period it went from running fine to sputtering at stops. It would restart but not on first try. It got so bad it finally died all together. When I opened the air cleaner there was a quarter of an inch of gas in the bottom of the air cleaner cyclinder. I hooked a fuel pressure guage and it is all over the map. Tops out at about 47 PSI (within tolerance). Any ideas? Please help. I'd like to fix this myself and save some dough. Thanks, Gary.

Well it surely sounds like ur car is running way to rich.First is do a code check off the ecm to see if u have any codes even tho ur cel may not be on.Second u could have a number of things to cause this like a bad O2 sensor,a bad egr valve(maybe) fuel pressure regulator going a bad injector or injectors. There are quite a few things that may create a over rich issue like a temperature sender going bad, creates a abnormal temp reading causing the car to run rich instead of lean.I would start with ground zero do a code check, fuel filter I say no ur getting plenty, plugs no,a clogged catalytic convertor (maybe) but prolly not.If I think of anything concrete I will post it.Its late and thats what came to mind even tho I am not mpfi knowledgable while the symptoms are about the same with most cars and or problems.

Correction to one of my last statements. If ur catalytic convertor is old it may be clogged there fore the exhaust is either particially blocked or completely blocked, which in turn would cause the car to quote run rich and the car would choke and not run due to not being able to omit the emissions. If ur car choked or bogged down while idling or running this could be the main culprit, while this may not b the real problem it's completely possible.I myself had a similar issue but never let it get to the point of the car not running, knew the cat was old and replaced and solved the problem with too much fuel being dumped into the system.

So have u at least checked what I recommended.U can at least cut off the convertor and see if the car runs,if so the cat would be the issue since the car can't breath.Just checking on ur status if u have done anything yet.
