Engine rotating and not starting
Friday, March 10, 2006 12:15 PM
Well here is the problem last night I parked my car in the yard and it was running great idling and everything so I turned off the car and come in for the night. Today I go out and turn the key it roatates and rotates but will not start up, the gauge showed there was a 1/4 a tank but I still put more in and still no start. I pulled out the plugs and there is definately gas going in there.it juist cranks cranks cranks but will not fire up what could it be ?

could have a bad fuel sender how much "more" gas did u put in. Dont keep trying to start it its hard on the fuel pump. put a couple gallons atleast and then try to start it

also turn the key on and off a couple times before u start it it will help prime the pump

it doesnt sound like a fuel problem, You have gas on the plugs sounds like your not getting spark. Check you plugs, wires, if you have them, and coils.

well I check it out nd it seems like the 2nd plug wire im not sure of the firing orde ron the 2.2 but its the second plug from passengers side , not sure if its the wire or the coil but hardly any spark if any and the other 3 plugs have fire so isnt there only 2 coils and 2 wires on one coil ? therefore 2 wouldnt wire ?

didnt quite understand that. however since the plugs dont fire together, it is poosible for the coil to be messed up and only partly fire one plug and not the other, depends on where the damage is. Besides, its cheaper to replace a wire then a coil, try that first.

and gas is even cheaper yet id still suggest a couple more gallons of gas

Adding a couple of more gallons to what you already added is not going to fix anything.

Brandon - I believe you were refering to how hard it is on the starter and not the fuel pump, right?

Sound like it might be a spark issue. Did you notice if you have thrown any codes? They don't always throw them, but bad coils can trip your ECM for a misfire code.

You might be flooded too, if you are noticing a significant amount of fuel in the head after pulling out the spark plug.

It is not possible for anyone to say for certain what is wrong with your car without diagnosing it themselves in person. What is a "clunk" to someone might be a "clack" to another, which can lead people down completely differant roads. - Just an example...

I would take your car in and have it diagnosed by a Chevy Technician. I know it costs money, but as an ex-Tech for both General Motors (Olds/GMC truck) and Honda, I have had a lot of experiance with people wanting me to "fix" their cars over the internet. It's very difficult to get any pertinant infomation from someone who doesn't know what they are talking about. - Not ment as an insult, only what I knew how to put it.

Good luck, and don't listen to the guys at AutoZone, they are a buncha hacks!

True, but you arent listening to TH. If his plugs are soaked in gas, His pump obviously works, But there should be NO fuel present on the plugs because of the combustion process, so intern its the spark plugs not working, or atleast one not working.

Signs of a bad fuel pump are the inability to go faster. IE: if you try and push the gas peddel farther and the car does not increase in power or speed, the fuel pump is on the way out. Another sign is not hearing it turn on then you first turn the key just before starting.

If a new plug /swopped plug and a new wire don't fix it heres a good ignition check

yah well I think what happend is it flooded and when I unhooked the plug wires to check the plug I put them back on wrong .I searched and searched and tried to figure it out and I think the wiring is right now and it does start but its missing badly around the bottom of the plug wire boots so I must need new plug wires. I think should invest in a haynes manual.anyone can confirm how the wires should be hooked up on a 95 sunfire 2.2 ?
