I dropped my car off at the mechanic Monday (03/06) to have them take a look at a coolent leak I've been dealing with for a few weeks, and they said that my head was warped and it's be like $900 to have it milled true.
Is head warping something that happens out of normal usage, or is there usually some type of issue that would cause that to happen?
Current milage: 117,000
The term 'stock' is COMPLETELY relative...
Have you been starting you can in very cold weather without letting your car warm up? Cause that will do it.
^ ^ ^ NO. A head warping is caused by overheating or a blown headgasket. Cold has nothing to do with warping a head. The head warps due to excessive heat.

Heads can warp for many reasons, but if somebody wants to charge you 900 bucks to have it milled then you are getting ripped off big time. Are you sure that 900 wasn't for the whole job?

Have you ever tried to warp a head, You can do it that way, i have in the past, and do some research, and you can find pages and pages of proof.
Iron block + aluminum head + improper warm up = possibly warped head. I've heard of many guys with quad 4's warping heads from not letting their cars warm up properly in cold temps. However, just because your head is warped doesn't mean theres something huge wrong with your car. Aluminum is weak, it doesn't take much to warp it.

exactly why (being a fireman, and sumtimes not able to give my car time to warm up b4 running...hard) i am gettin a block heater...
Thats not warping from cold. It's still warping from heat. When the engine is ice cold and you start it up it begins to heat up. If you take off like a bat out of hell with an ice cold iron block the aluminum head will heat up faster then the block resulting in warping from heat. The only thing that can warp an aluminum head on an iron block is the difference in the two metals expansion rate. metal only expands under heat not cold.
The only thing that expands when cold is water everything else contracts and expansion is the only think that can warp a head.

I believe thats what el fuego means. He's not saying the cold warps it, rather the lack of warm up time in the cold weather.
Sunfirepower, if you don't beat on your car when it's cold you should be fine. You don't have to let it idle for 10 minutes or anything, just let it warm up before you get on the throttle if you can.

.
Thank you, thats what i thought i said.
Ok my bad ! Sorry for any confusion. I mistakenly thought he WAS saying cold could do it all by itself.
Again sorry for any confusion El Fuego, And thank you Red Bird for showing me what he ment.
Fuego, I'd read some of your other posts and you seemed like you know what your talking about thats why I was like

. Glad we straighten it out.

Jeesh thats high, my local machine shop has 'em for $325 (reconditioned). He says he keeps about 5 on the shelf because of the problem with the 2.2L

see that's the problem,i dont have time to let it warm up at all before having to drive hard. wen my pager goes off, i have less than 3 minutes to get the hall and catch a truck, and i live like 6 minutes from the hall
