Swapping 3-speed auto to 4-speed...
Monday, February 27, 2006 7:57 PM
I've searched through the forum but haven't found the answer....

Has anyone replaced a three-speed automatic transmission with a four-speed automatic?

The tranny on my '95 Cavalier has started to give me a little grief after 150,000 miles. If I have to go through the trouble of pulling the transmission to rebuild it, it seems to make sense to put in a four-speed instead. I don't want to go with a manual, just want to "add a gear" if it's not much more effort than a regular swap.

for a car with 150,000 on it I'd say its time for a new car, or just replace it with another 3 speed. Cavi transmissions are cheap and easy to come by.

Thanks for the replies. I tried searching the maintenance forum but perhaps I don't know all the 'kewl' ways to mispell "transmission" to find what I need .

In any event, I got the answer - not a simple swap unless I can find a totaled car to retrieve the brain-box and wiring harness. Even though it's got 150k on the clock, the car's in great shape - 1 owner (my fiancé's grandmother), no rust, no dents, still gets 30mpg with the TCC unplugged.

I'll just monitor the tranny, perhaps do another fluid/filter change. Thanks again for the help.
