Halogen headlight bulbs, which are best?
Sunday, January 29, 2006 12:49 PM
Hello

Have an 04 Sunfire 5 Speed

I want to but aftermarket bulbs to replace the stock head light bulbs for brighter road illumination.

I've seen extra power bulbs that give 20% more light, cool blue bulbs and a more expensive one (can't remember the name, "nightstar" I think) that is supposed to be the brightest.

Any recommendations on what I should get?

Thanks
Walt

i use and reccomend silverstars, they are imo atleast 10X brighter than stock bulbs they have a nice white lite which is what i was looking for.. the silverstars are brighter then my stock hi-beam bulbs... i'll be buying a set of PIAA's this summer to see if i like em, i just need to find some fog lite bulbs to match... silverstars are kinda expensive i think i paid $50 for 2....

Thanks for the post.

I just checked the Sylvania website.
Yeah the silverstars are the brightest.
They mention "glare", from these bulbs.
Should that be a concern?

Silverstars definitely. They are bright and pretty inexspensive.

I like my Silverstars except for the fact that I cannot see a thing when it rains. I paid ~$30 for a set of two from Advanced Auto Parts about 8 months ago.

ANYTHING is an improvement over plain bulbs! I'm surprised the headlights meet minimum illumination standards in all 50 states!

Quoted from Sigma Automotive: " A special reflective coating to the outer surface of an HIR bulb allows visible light to pass through while infra red light (not visible to the human eye) is reflected back onto the filament. This recycling effect superheats the filament thus increasing light intensity. 50% longer lifespan, 50% more energy efficient, lower operating temp. & improved beam pattern over stock halogen."

This is what they tend to look like:

What advantages, if any, do the silverstars have over the cool blues, if any?

Are cool blues better in the rain than the silverstars?

thanks

blues are BY FAR worst in the rain! even the stocks are better in the rain then the "cool blue" ones.

go with silverstar you wont be disappointed!

goto wallyworld/walmart... see the new GE nighthawks which feature B]XENON GAS instead of silverstar's HALOGEN GAS...

and they're cheaper too!

sure, u can go PIAA or some other bling-bling name, but i'm more into the reasonable priced upgrades.

here's a discussion I set up on another car forum:

i higly reccomend silverstars, and get yourself a cheap set of driving lights/fog lights for rain lighting, i would stay away from PIAA headlights for two reason

1. most aren't DOT apporived, meaning illegal for road use
2. they are known for melting the headlight lenses

the silverstars are better then cool blue filtering b/c they emit a natural "whitelight" which can project further better, and causes less glare on certain road objects (sighs and other reflective surfaces) i bought these bulbs for $30 at advance as well amd would HIGLY recomend them

Hey,

I agree!! I bought a set of silverstars just before Christmas, and it was the best $50 ( Canada. ) I ever spent. From what I hear, the nighthawks are not as god as the Silverstars. I will be adding a set of driving/fog lights for in the rain!!

How easy are they to wire in? I think I will go with a seperate switch, that way I only turn them on when I need them!!

Take care,

Will

PIAA's have the same wattage rating. I have been using them for over a year without a problem. Works wonders in the rain.

best thing to do

they're pretty easy to install. hardest part is actually mounting them and running the wires. plus it depends on if you get a kit with a relay, or without a relay. i got the onse w/out realy, and ran a seperate switch

Hey,

Thanks for the tip. I think I will get one without a relay and run a seperate switch. Where did you mount your switch?

Thanks & take care,

Will
