Oil light keeps coming on
Friday, January 27, 2006 6:11 AM
I just replaced the timing chain, tensioner, timing cover gasket and head gasket on a 1997 Cavalier LS 2.2L that I got for $250. Car runs fine runs at normal operating temperature and everything. The problem is the oil light keeps coming on. I originally thought the oil was low because during lunch yesterday I didnt get the cap all the way down and on so the reading was off. I added a quart thinking that I had went through about 3 qts in 2-3 days. Well, I figured out I was wrong and now have a TAD bit over full, no big deal. Here is what I am noticing:

The reason I thought I was low is the oil light keeps coming on... Mostly on deceleration and from what I can tell seems to come on at LOWER than 1200 rpms (if you are higher than that it goes off)... Is the light oil level??? Or oil pressure??? Or can it come on for both??? The car did throw a code also yesterday that I need to get read now, but last night I found out autozone only reads codes until 5pm (those lazy punks). Is there anyway to "flash" the code (short the circuit and then the light flashes long and short to give you a number for the code you have)???

Is it maybe the sensor going bad??? Oil pump??? Any common problems related to/similar to this???

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben

If I recall correctly (don't pay much attention to the start-up light check anymore LOL), The red oil can is pressure, and the orange 'OIL' is for oil level. The level sensor is in the side of the oil pan.

Alright... Didnt know if there was two separate lights... It is the oil "can" with the drop in the middle of it on the left side of the cluster (next to the ETS and Check Engine lights).

on my old 95 2.2, the oil level sensor, which is right in the front of the pan, exploded. My oil light kept coming on, so i drained the oil and checked the sensor, or what was left, and ended up having to take the oil pan off to clean out all the plastic.
