i ran out of gas this morning (don't ask

) my question is...is that really bad for the pump? someone told me i should basically start saving for a new pump, the car only has 28k on it, do you think it was really that bad for it?

heh, yeah i usually try not to, but i was coming back to pittsburgh on sunday and decided to just wait till monday to get gas, blew it off, figured id get it tuesday after work, i mean, my low fuel light wasn't on...well i guess i never checked that when i put in the sunfire cluster, but apparantly the low fuel light is inoperative on the new cluster...
chalk this one up to stupidity i guess....oh well, i needed the exercise walking to class anyways

If you try and start the car after you ran out of gas you can run into problems.
We had a neon fuel pump that needed to be rebuilt. We sent it in. The core was not repairable and they sent it back taken apart. The whole inside of the pump was melted. The customer says the car stopped running so he tried to start it several more times.
well the whole thing goes like this....i started the car this morning, it started right up like normal, ran for a min or so, and stalled...i restarted it, it started, ran for about 2 seconds and died, started it again, it fires, and dies, then i tried another 2 or 3 times to restart it, no luck, got pissed and walked to class....halfway to class i realized that it just may be out of gas, so after work i grabbed my gascan and got some gas...put gas in, primed it, and she fired right up. hope its ok, or if it is going to die it does so before the first of the month, when my warranty expires

I don't think it'd ruin your fuel pump because aren't there several engine-part-replacement procedures that require you to run the car dry?
Just remember that it sits submerged in fuel and needs the fuel to keep it cool. Run it empty too many times and it will cause damage. Only once and you should be fine.

Yeah, but you have to turn off the fuel pump to do so. Soooo...
unless your sitting their trying to start it for an ungodly amount of time, which many people will do.
You'll be ok. If fuel pumps had to replaced everytime someone ran out of gas gm and ford wouldn't be having financial growing pains right now.

even if you eventually get a pump, just be glad you don't have an F-body, equinox, or one of those tobbaggin sized tanks in the gm trucks.
