Winter storage question?
Friday, January 20, 2006 8:26 PM
My car has not been turned on since Mid sept and hasn't moved out of my garage. I was doing work on my suspension tonight and i noticed some drippage spots on my tarp when i have on the ground acting as a vapor barrier. I wiped them up and they are brown in color like oil. Now i didn't have this problem before i stored the car. When ivestagating where the drips came from, it looks where the crankshaft and starter are looks like either some condensation or somthing wet is comming from that area where the block meets the oil pan. Now the weather has been going from really cold to warm weather all this winter. Has anyone else who has stored their cars found drippings under them during the season?

First of all, if I understand you correctly, you have a tarp under your car, correct? You say you're using this as a vapor barrior... you have to remember that a tarp will not breathe. If there was any moisture on the car when you put it away (which there probably was) it would be locked in by the tarp. That will cause more problems than without, the moisture has to escape or it will cause condensation and rust. Cover the car in an old thin sheet, they are light and breathable and will not cause problems. The whole car doesn't have to be covered either. What you saw was probably dirty condensation (the dirt coming from the bottom of the car or caked oil seepage from the bottom of the engine.

Bottom line, lose the tarp and cover the car with an old, thin bedsheet.

No No.... The tarp is on my garage floor and not touching the car. Its there to prevent moisture from the cement. I have a breatheable car cover over my car. When i put it away it sat in the sun for the whole afternoon and wasn't covered in my garage untill a day or so afterwards.

It's probably just some seepage from the oil pan, pan gasket, or rear main seal. Mine does the same thing. You wouldn't notice the leak if you were driving it every day, but since it's been parked for a couple of months, there will probably be some accumulation. Is there any way you can get a picture of where you saw the leak on the bottom of the block?
