Timing Chain Tensioner
Thursday, January 12, 2006 6:14 PM
Hi, I've done some searching on the forums now for about 2 days now and i can't find what I'm looking for. I was wondering how much will it cost me to get the chain and tensioner replaced at a shop? If this has been answered it would be nice if you could post the link for me,

Thanks
Jason

No idea... I did it myself. Not that hard to do, and a great way to learn some things about the engine.

But, considering this is an international forum... the price I'd get at a shop here isn't going to be the same as a shop near you.... so the best way.... is to try a shop near you, or try the regional forums near you.

You can buy the parts AND get a Haynes manual for your car telling you how to do it, and probably still be able to afford most of the tools you will need to complete the job for the same amount of money. why not do it yourself? I did.. make sure sure you have the right tool to remove the studs from the bottom of the timing cover, I can't think of what they're called at the moment, somebody help me out.. anyway, with those out of the way, it's easy.

Alright guys, I guess I'm willing to try and change the timing chain and tensioner by myself. I have a few questions for your that have done it before.

Where did you purchase your timing chain and tensioner? and also how much did it set you back?

Should i change the sprokets while im at it too?

Also the only reason I wasnt really willing to do it myself is i dont know how to drop the engine down, what do i jack on underneath the engine to support it?? Also i have a 97 2.2L 5 speed

Any pictures of what i would need to jack on would be extremely helpful

Jack up the car, put it on jackstands. Then use a wide (2x6 if you have it) piece of wood, or a flat board of, say, plywood.... use that on the bottom of the oil pan with the floor jack to support the weight. DON'T jack up the car with it... just use it to support the weight of the engine block. Spread out over the whole bottom of the engine, it will be OK. As long as you DON'T jack up the car with that. If the car comes up off the jackstands, you're too high.

I get my timing stuff straight from the GM parts desk. I didn't replace my chain, I only had 100,000 kms on it (60,000 miles). I did the shoe on the tensioner, that's it. (I had mine apart for the cams.... 2.4L tho.. ) I re-used the guides and tensioner.

I payed $30 at the local knects(mispelled) for the timing chain kit with gears, chain and tensioner. Depending on your miles and how much you've abused(or not) the engine you might want to replace it all to be safe and save ya from doing it again later.

$30 wow, I went down to the local dealership and this is what i got for quotes,
GM part #24577247 Timing Chain $77.46
GM part #12363192 Tensioner $22.95
Eric Esler, was your kit for a 2.4L? or was it for the 2.2L? From what i've read I should only go with the GM parts. Do these prices seem close to those of you other 2.2L OHV owner that have changed your tensioner and chain??

Push the tensioner all the way in. (Push HARD) it will click and stay in. Push it again (HARD!) and it will release, providing tension.

My car has the 2.2L. I don't think i used the gm replacement, but I did compare the replacement with the gears and chain I took off and you could not tell the difference. Also you will find the dealership to be higher priced than most parts stores even for the same brand, you might call around and see if any stores have the kit and check the company with them.
