i took my 01 cavalier with a "warranty" in to get a fuel leak fixed, turns out its not covered under warranty, and the fuel pressure regulator is leaking. rather than paying $100 for a tech to work for one hour, i'd rather do it. does anyone know how hard it is to change? or even its location?
i'm used to carb'd trucks, this small injected car thing is new to me.
i just realized i forgot that...... 2.4L
Its actually pretty simple.
If you open your hood, and look at your engine, you see the "2.4 Twin Cam" on the top of the engine. Well just before that, there is a cylindrical rail that runs the length of the engine. On the left side of that is the FPR, a vertical cylinder looking thing with a steel line running out of the bottom of it.
To remove it:
1. Start your engine and pull the fuse for the fuel pump (in the fuse box in the engine bay). This helps to alleviate some of the pressure in the fuel rail, but won't relieve all of it.
2. Remove the stock air box if you still have one. This is done by removing the band clamp that is around the S tube on the end of the box, then the clamp that is around the throttle body (there is a hole in the center of the box where you can get a screwdriver in, undo the clamp and lift up on the box). You also need to remove the two bolts near the top of the airbox by the right side of the fuel rail.
3. There are two bolts that hold the fuel rail to the cam tower. Remove both of those bolts.
4. You can now pull almost straight up on the fuel rail. It will be snug, but should come up, you won't be able to move it very far if you still have all the fuel line clamps on (follow the fuel lines back to find them). The injectors will pop out with the rail.
5. On the end of the rail, the end with the FPR on it (has a line coming out the bottom), there is a torx screw facing down the rail, and one facing upwards. Loosen those screws until the square bracket comes off.
6. Use a rag and pull the fuel line out of the bottom of the FPR. SOME FUEL WILL COME OUT. DO NOT LOSE THE LITTLE RUBBER O-RING. You can't put it back together without that O-Ring.
7. The FPR is held on to the rail with an O-Ring, just pull the FPR off and install the new one.
Installation is the reverse of the removal.

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!
thanks, thats where i thought it was. i'll order the part tomorow and hopefully install it on the weekend.
I'm new to this EFI stuff, i'm used to big trucks with wide open engine compartments
Just an FYI I would drive as least as possible with a leaking FPR. It is very unsafe.

It's more likely JUST the O-rings, not the FPR.
Ever had the FPR off? (previous owner maybe?) If so... both O-rings should have been replaced.
i bought a new FPR when all i needed was the stupid O-rings
