SUCKS. I pay 8.00 to see a movie thats supposed to start at 7:00pm, but instead im forced to watch ads for coke, fandango, and other crap for over 20 minutes before the movie starts. 20 MINUTES!!
In my opinion if a movie is ad-supported and they expect people to sit around for 20 min it should be half price.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Movie tickets only costs $1.50 here, but man they get ya on the $2.50 negative ounce bottles of water lol
It's a four banger, you gotta bang it four times to get it goin'....
LOL!! funny you should say that. i remember las year some guy got pissed at this very samething, went up to where the camera is and smashed the glass there.
Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
I would not have minded when they started showing commercials at the theatre if they would have lowered the ticket prices. The worst commercial is the anti piracy one, I paid to see a movie and I get lectured not to steal movies it make no sense.
AmazingJay
LMAO! im grateful that movie prices are only $8 or a little less. i honestly am not surprised that ticket prices aren't double what they are now. those 20 minutes of commercials help keep your ticket price down.
there's usually a lot of staff to pay, bills, and other such expenses. why do you think concessions cost so much? cause the ticket prices are so low. it's a give and take situation, one price is low, while the other is high.
also, where do you think a lot of pirated movies come from? some kid sits in a theater with a video camera and records the movie while it's playing at a prescreening, puts it on their computer and sends it out. so playing anti-pirating ads before a movie (at least IMO) is the place to play em. it's a very serious offense to record a movie to distribute. so maybe by playing that ad before the movie will help deter people from doing it (wishful thinking, i know, but it's a start).
If you really hate it, just show up 20 minutes later. They all have about the same commercial / preview time.
but new question, you think they should be allowed to prohibit you from bringing in your own food?
Promise that forever we will never get better at growing up and learning to lie
This is the reason I don't go to movies anymore.
The last one I went to see was matrix Reloaded. Not only was I thoroughly disappointed, I had some punk-ass kid kicking the back of my seat through half the movie... Only after standing up and looking the little bastard in the eyes for 15 minutes did he get the point. He settled down.
I figure it's a bloody waste to go see it in the theatre because it's overpriced, the concessions are over-priced and you have to deal with other people not figuring out it's a bad thing to talk while the movie is on, and the odd jackass that falls asleep after the first 20 mins... and SNORES the rest of the time.
Frankly, I have a 60" HDTV and a 7.1 THX system at home and a comfortable chair and ottoman. I can pause the movie if I gotta take a leak, or want to get some more pop or popcorn. I don't have to worry about missing a damned thing, and the great part is, I can watch it AGAIN.
And, I don't have to beat down a punk that deserves it for being a punk.
So what if I have to wait 6 months to see a movie? I can read reviews and put it on my "to buy" "to rent" and "to ignore" list.

personally i think the ads need to go, but keep previews, i love previews. as far as bringing in your own food.....i don't see what it hurts, i don't buy food at a theater anyways. too damned expesive, so what if i bring my own soda......im not gonna buy their crap anyways
and i always sit in the last row so nobody is behind me.......i hate people behind me. and talkers should have thier throats hit with a hammer

If i could stomach any movie out there, i might go see it, but more than likely ill wait till someone at my work dlaods it and ill watch it then.
Personally, there are just some artist i wouldn't "give" money to, but would like to see some of the movies they are in.

haha you said pop...
That sounds like a damn nice setup there, wish I had that.
I agree prices are way too high both for the damn movie, which sucks half the time, and the snacks, which I never buy since its 6 bucks for a bag of Skittles. I do like the previews though, even if I never see the movies. But it also sucks that I dont have a DVD player so I can't go out to blockbuster and rent DVD's. I guess my poor arse is stuck!
Yeah.. I always promised myself that I'd get a good Home theatre setup when I got my own place. The only down side is that I'm working harder than ever.
If you don't have a DVD player... man.. get with the 20th century!!! J/K
I just tired of the bulls**t of going to the movies, finding a decent seat, hoping to god that some @!#$ doesn't sit behind me, etc. etc. I also figure that in 10 years, when I go to upgrade, I'll have saved enough money to buy a better home theatre, and saved myself a lot of aggrivation... I used to buy a ticket in a theatre for the matinee, and go in for the rest of the day... Now, I rent $30 worth of movies (or watch one of the ones I own), and I don't have to worry about getting charged with trespassing
I have to say that although I don't REGULARLY go out for movies, there is a couple of reprise theatres that I will go to when they are showing some of the classic films like Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon... etc. They usually only show a double bill, so that's when I go.

Most of you don't even know where the money for movie tickets goes. Most of the time the theatre doesn't get any of the money from ticket sales. They have to pay MGM, Universal or whatever company produced the movie 100% of ticket sales just to get the movies. Sometimes they want exclusive rights to a show a movie within a certain distance, then they have to pay money up front in addition to 100% of ticket sales.
When my ex wife wanted exclusive rights to batman (years ago). She had to put up 30 grand and all the ticket sales. The first 30 grand of profit off of concession sales went to the producers. That's why the concession stand prices are so high and also why they have to have advertisements. That's the only place they make money. If there weren't any advertisements and people didn't have to pay a premium for the snacks, then the place would go bankrupt.
I always make it a point to buy something whenever I see a movie, just to support the people who work there.

That sucks. The people who own the theatres should just go on strike refuse to show any movies until the studios are fair on the profit sharing. I searched IMDB for
Batman since you mentioned it I am sure they didn't need 100% of the ticket sales to make a profit. You can blame the studios but the theatre owners are to blame too for accepting deals like that, after all the studios would not make as much money if it wasn't for the theatres.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say, but that was the cost of getting the movies in. Keep in mind that this was 15+ years ago. I'm no longer married to her and she no longer owns a theatre, so things may be different (better or worse).
hrmm... either way, I'm confused as to how a theatre could stay alive doing that. Not withstanding the fact that I've pretty much halted my movie-going, I can't see how a theatre could stay afloat after paying out 100% admissions, and only surviving on concessions.. I mean, pardon the pun, but that's peanuts. how much does it cost for the product itself, and then, factor in the amount it costs to look after the food items, you're barely making a profit, and then factor in all the junk for the power, heating/AC, cleaning... etc.
I can't see how a movie house (independant or otherwise) could stand up to that.
Transeat In Exemplum: Let this stand as the example.
The product itself is very cheap. A 32oz coke that you pay $250 for actually costs about 20 cents to make and that's mostly the cup and straw. Popcorn is the same way, I'm not sure about the candies. She didn't have the nachos or corndogs that some places serve nowdays.
The staff was 1 person selling tickets, 1 person at the concession stand and my wife who ran the projectors, looked after things and gave the others breaks. On weekend evenings there would be 2 more people there to help. Cleaning was 2 ladies that came in at about 2am for about an hour. The place only had 2 screens and seated about 70 people per screen.
Rent and utilities probably had the highest costs, but we're talking about an older building out of the way in Orlando. I don't think there was a premium on the location.
A good night would bring in about 10 grand. I'm not sure how much of that was ticket sales. Anyway, it was profitable if only a little bit. She sold the place when the multiplexes started to be built close by and that was before we were married so I wasn't involved enough to know the exact details.
They also had draft houses in Orlando. The tickets were only $2 but it was more like a restaraunt where you could eat real food and drinks. The wife wanted one of those, but the liquor license and insurance costs were too high for her to feel comfortable with.
Its only done this way because theaters take it in the ass.
If all theaters were to strike against it, im sure tom cruise would be getting a whole lot less than his $30mil asking price.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nah, actors get what their last picture was worth.
Anyhow..
Labotomi: I suspect that the movie house would have been good if there wasn't such a premium on new releases... if it were converted into a reprise cinema, maybe it would have been more profitable. I'm guessing though...

If they went on strike it would be a win - lose situation. The theatres are really the ones with no money unless movies come out. MGM or Universal could just say "F U" and go straight to DVD and tape and make sales that way and people would eat them up like hot cakes because DVD sales are incredibly high. So if you put it in that perspective, the studios don't fully need movie theatres, they have other options of making money but you're right, they wouldn't make as much but they would probably still make tons of money...greedy bastards.

Tony, you hit it right on the head. Advertisements pay someone who needs the money, in this case, the theatres. If the theatres don't have money, you get no movie theatre...simple as that. Just as people complain about tv commercials...TV stations need money from somewhere, they use Ads from companies and charge them a ton of money...that money goes to executives, workers, actors, etc etc. Why do you think they could afford to pay the cast of Friends a ton of dough? They up the price to companies if the show gets more ratings, the companies want exposure so they pay it...it's a cycle of money flow.
Also, if there weren't commercials, you wouldn't know about any companies unless you saw it in a store and they would probably bankrupt by then. If no one advertised, there would be a ton of mom and pop companies everywhere and no chains or big companies and everyone would be on the brink of bankruptcy. They spend money to make money....what the public doesn't know, the public won't buy...that's how it works.

Those ad's rule. Take your woman out to eat, know the time of the movie, and show up right on time. Works great. No waiting and a nice full stomach to enjoy and laugh. Those ad's save time when your running late too. Good stuff.
