Working with Car Sanding, Paint, Clear Coat
Thursday, July 01, 2010 1:07 PM
This thread is going to be very similar to my Working with Drift kit thread. Please do not flood it with comments that harass or put me down. I will try not to make any stupid comments or questions, although my teachers said that no question is stupid. Anyways, I am just going to post pics and just hope that you guys will give me suggestions and tips on how to do each part. Thanks again!

-July 1st, 2010-
So here I am just testing out how I am going to sand my car with 400 grit wet sandpaper. It is working pretty good so far without any major problems. I am beginning to tape off the door jams and windows just to get it ready and to see how long it will take. Going to cover that stuff up later after i sand and paint the car. I just realized I should paint the black mirrors white since it will look tons better. Anyways, onto the goodies.

PICS!
Wet Sander in bucket

Adhesive to help side skirts stay on, going to bolt in wheel well as well

Rust-o-leum Paint, 1 Gloss Black for hood, 3 Gloss White for body
2 x 4 inch Foam Brush, 2 x 2 inch Foam Brush, 2 x 1 inch Foam Brush

5 x Krylon Clear Gloss Coat

400 grit Wet Sandpaper

120 oz. Odorless Mineral Spirits (only cost 12.99 at local hardware store compared to like 70 something online)

Front of car, hood sanded

Side of car, door sanded and fender, and door jams taped up

Side mirror somewhat taped

Windows taped up well

Keyhole taped up

Rear nothing done yet, but huge help from bluedriftcavy putting it on, I would have never figured out how to get it on

Front left side, nothing done yet

And that is all for now. I have a baseball game tonight, or I would have done a ton more taping and sanding. Tell me what you guys think and any suggestions would be awesome. Anyways, here is the writeup I am going to follow:
http://www.stylusscustoms.com/poormanspaintjob.html

And please do not harass me about doing it. I was waiting for someone for a while, but he is way too busy and I need this car done, I can't stand it the way it is anymore and I don't have 2000 dollars for a good paint job.

need help with the side moldings. i was going to leave the long one on but i don't think it is going to connect with the drift kit, it is higher than the kit is. should i leave both pieces on or take them both off? i have seen a green cavalier with them both on and i like it, and both off looks plain. i actually like these side moldings to tell you the truth. but it seems like the short piece got in the way of my drift kit or it was right above it and i didnt like it. anyways here is the car with both on.

this photo is from a guy from cardomain, i take no credit for it.

have any suggestion on how to fix that rear bumper without having to take it off? it took us forever to get that thing on and i only have 2 hands. zip ties and then hide them? that is the only thing i can think of at the moment.

sometimes u have to notch and reglass the bumb\pers to get the wave out.

Re: Working with Car Sanding, Paint, Clear Coat

i don't want to do any reglassing if i don't have to. i know the sides underneath the door are too short so i have to fill in that space with some fiberglass, but i dont want to be doing more than i have to. and the bumper has a bigger space that needs glassed. the side underneath the door i can just put little strips all the way across, sand and paint. the rear i need something to hold it up and it will look fine.

this.

justin are you planning on using those foam brushes to paint the entire car?

also you will need to do a much better taping job to prevent overspray. especially if your'e painting it in ur driveway, any wind at all will put that @!#$ all over your car.

spend alot of time wetsanding, alot. follow every contour on every piece. move up thru the grits. REMEMBER WHAT I JUST SAID? do not get lazy on the sanding, now that youv'e started with the 400 there's no turning back. i'd normally say something like youv'e either got alot of balls or your'e not very bright for attempting this but i think we all now which of those two you qualify for. another case of jumping ahead and doing something without researching it. you really need to learn some patience.

but i'm not going to continue giving you @!#$, i've given you a few pointers, and you obviously know how to ask questions so continue asking, you can't possibly look any dumber at this point.

good luck with the project man, i really hope somehow you can prove all of us wrong.

edit numero uno- using the "adhesive" to glue your sideskirts on, very bad idea. do it right or don't do it at all.

Jebus this is epic...

Where's the roller to apply your paint? While you're at it, you go ahead and make you some side skirts out of wood. SWEET!

i dont think zip ties or that adhesive i got will work because zip ties will show and that glue won't hold it against the frame because the bumper isn't flat. if i could reach it on top i would do that but it doesn't want to reach. bludriftcavy what do you think i can do?

Re: Working with Car Sanding, Paint, Clear Coat
Thursday, July 01, 2010 3:01 PM
thanks blucavvy for the tip. still don't know what to do with the rear bumper. and i did research a lot on doing this. i figured it would hold up better than spray paint from a rattle can and it is easier to apply than that. and yes i am going to use the 4" foam brush to do most of the car, the 2" to get into grooves on the kit and other areas, and the 1" to get those tiny pieces inside the trunk, inside the door, the mirror, etc. i know i am not going to get lazy on the sanding. do you think i should buy like 800 grit next and wet sand it all over again, and then move up to like 1200 wet sandpaper and be done? the guy who did his car only used 400-600 one time. and i saw a pic of it 6 months later and it peeled in his bumper but that was it because he only did a flat sand there he didnt get in all the grooves like i will.

Seriously, don't do this. It will not look good and it will be pure hell to go back and do it right. I think you should use this stuff on a similar surface fist.(A surface that is not actually on a car!) I believe the result you see will turn you off of this idea...

400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000

do not paint it with the foam brushes. find someone that'll spray it for you in return for a favor or something. get a summer job to pay for it, do something. and you do realize you won't be able to use that hand block sander the whole time right? you'll have to use your hands and smaller pads of paper to get into grooves (this is'nt the correct way of doing it in the first place but your'e pretty much beyond that point now).

Re: Working with Car Sanding, Paint, Clear Coat

yes i know i have to use hand sandpaper for some parts. i have a friend now that wants to do an estimate. he says he will spray it for me for just a little over the cost of paint. but thing is i already spent 100 dollars on my supplies. i looked at that guys website and the paint actually looks good, his final result that is. i've seen people comment they did the same thing and they liked how it turned out. plus, he can only spray it black and wants extra for the side skirts install and rear bumper pull up. i can do all this on my own and save like 600 dollars if not more. if he can't spray it white with a black hood, i am going to do it myself.

Your a tool man....at the very least buy some duplicolor shop series paint and get your friend to spray it for you...its cheap ass paint but will make a way better job sprayed then this monstrosity!

this is the inventor of the roll on paint job:
http://www.rickwrench.com/index79master.htm?http://www.rickwrench.com/50dollarpaint.html

he actually did it with a roller lol, but with the foam brushes, it will make it look flat and not all wavy like his does. if the guy wants too much tomorrow, on with my project...

Re: Working with Car Sanding, Paint, Clear Coat

Im going to just skip over the paint process you are planning out... and point out the spray can clear coat... I hate to disappoint you but my front bumper was spray painted due to lack of funds. My friend did an amazing job on it. It looked brand new and absolutely flawless... for about 6 months. He used I believe 4 cans of clear just for the front bumper, to get a good even shine to it... your 5 cans will NEVER cover the entire car. I cant tell you how amazing it looked. He's really good with rattlecan.. By the time it made it to 6 months of daily driving, it went down hill fast, and it's now pitted & faded and looks beat to hell. I would have never done an entire car like that but a bumper isn't that big a deal and it worked for what I expected it to work for... short term making the car presentable. But it was JUST A BUMPER.

Please stop where you are and get it done right. You get what you pay for. You will most likely regret it.

like i said guys, thanks for trying to gear me otherwise, but i already have my mind made up like i did in the original posting. the only thing you can do is:
1. paint it white and black for me using a compressor and air gun
2.help me make it look the best when i am done

once i'm through like 4 coats or so, do i got to re-sand it again? if not, can i just spray the clear over top of the 4th coat and be done? then wait like a week, and take it to the car wash, then polish it, then wax it. then i will post pics and say, i told you so. and every bad thing you said about it and me will be cast into the fire.
