New type of Carbon Fiber?!?!
Tuesday, January 19, 2010 3:01 PM
Alright, I thought this was cool so I wanted to post it. Anyway at my work we make custom parts for Harleys.. mostly fiberglass. Anyway we tried something new and here is the result.

This is recycled carbon fiber.. instead of weaved, what you see here is left over after trimming or a part that was destroyed, they take that weave cut up and kind of mix it together. basically like stranded carbon fiber.. Anyone that has messed with fiberglass knows the stranded f/g is stronger then weaved and I'd hope this kind of relates but I cant say 100%. I know the weave is purely looks too but i thought this looks cool as well.We finished a couple pieces and decided to spray some clear coat over it to see what it would look like. So I started spraying clear coat on it and this is the result. It has a real marbleized look to it. I think it would be awesome to use on a bike as the actual finish and maybe even use it as part of a 2 tone..For cars though, maybe not so much, unless doing a entire car it may look out of place though. Another cool Idea we had was being able to spray a candy color over it and make it like a blue marbleized paint etc..

sorry for crappy pics, Only have my cell phone with me at work, pictures don't really do it much justice either.

I dont know why but the last pic reminds of like painted black plywood. So if I'm understanding you right you used it like a normal carbon fiber and just wrapped it? but with the strand version.

Ive seen this once or twice before I am still wanting to see some in person.

It's a contender to replace my traditional cf parts

no not at all. little different process for manufacturing parts, multiple times, quickly. We've made molds for everything and lay everything on/inside the molds.. we don't wrap anything

jeff, i will say it looks a lot better in person.. the depth is just awesome.

Like it! Almost looks like a clear coated patent leather.

Yeah, or cracks in the clear...

Who cares what it looks like you could always just paint it. You also could make a hood out of that and it would probably be cheaper
than weaved cf cause it doesnt have to be single full sheets laid overtop of eachother and its made from scrap left overs.

Is it just as lite as weaved cf?

I like it. It has two intellectual points to it: One, it gives the look of fiberglass with the shine of the CF and two, it is rather lightweight vs fiberglass. Also, think of all the saving you could have without wasting any CF. Id have that look any day.

If I may ask, how did you make it? (in general)
