i know there are other forums, buti dont wanna mess up by not understand. how many coats should i use? and sandpaper. i have clearcoat i plan on using afterwards, but step by step, how do i make this look great?
Search. This has been covered multiple times.
How many coats depends on how dark you want them to be. Keep putting coats on till they are as dark as you want them.

^everything this guy said.
^^^^. I did mine a few weeks ago on my 01 z24. I wet sanded with 1000 grit, then 2000, make sure they dried real good, then right before i sprayed them i put some rubbing alcohol & window cleaner on it to make sure it was clean as possible, then sprayed to my desire. just keep a consistent spray so they all look the same.
no sandpaper needed
no clearcoat needed
no more than 3 coats

1. if u want it to take on a smooth look u'll wetsand.
2. if u want it to look better and not fade as fast u'll clearcoat.
3. the number of coats is completely opinion based. it depends how dark each person likes it. i used 7 or 8 on my tails, probly should've just gone black and saved the 5 bucks. lol

ok, so 1000 and 2000 grit sandpaper i need, i have the clearcoat, any techniques for sanding on how to get a smooth finish?
wax on wax off. lol. no seriously though just try to evenly sand, don't spend too much time in any one area. also, make sure ur wetsanding. u can never use too much water. when ur done make sure whatever ur tinting is completely clean bfore painting. vht is different than normal paints, it acts more like a clearcoat so take it easy and use thin coats. allow the coats to dry the correct amount of time, don't try and rush it, this will help you determine how dark the tint actually is, bcuz it dries differently than it looks when first applied.
hope this helps man.
im sure it will. love the headlights. if my tail and turn lights turn out like that, ill love them. when the lights go on, its more clear than black right?
my headlights no longer look like that. those were film covers that failed. lol.
and no normally if u tint stock headlights in anyway it dramatically reduces light output. with hid's u'd probly be alright but any kind of stock bulb just won't shine thru tinted headlights with any kind of efficiency, unless of course u only put on like one coat of vht. taillights normally turn out fine as long as u don't go ridiculously dark. and remember ur tail's are supposed to shine for a reason, so don't go too dark. u'll be putting urself in danger as well as other's.

wow... just wow.
i would do a write up for a sticky on this subject if i knew it would actually be stickied.
this question gets asked at least once a week i swear.

Trailer Queen corvette wanna-be with 40 coats of wax and powdercoating that soaks in.
just remmeber, dont be surprised if one day you get plled over for smoked tails.
that's y i thought ahead (see sig)
Thats still illegal blu. You altered the stock red lense.
i painted the taillights on a jimmy and i went really dark. but is not hard to sand them. i started with 400 grit but that was cause the surface wasnt in the best condition.
after all of the inperfections were out i just worked my way up the grit to 800 then 1000 then 2000 wet sandin of course. once i was done sanding i cleaned them off and let
them dry. my first cloat of paint was thin, just enough that it was completely covered. i let each coat dry as long as the can told me to... dont remember what is said.
to check and see if they are how u want them i stuck a flashlight to the hole in the back( just remember that too dark will make it so that people cant see your brakelights on during the day.
if u get it to the tint u want but you have the orange peel effect after an hour or so u can re-wet sand it but cak sure u dont sand too much in one spot or you might remove too much
paint and now u have a light spot. them you can use clear coat to finish it up.
i did like what bluecavvy did but to my brothers grand prix taillights but i used normal black paint
here is the link if u want to see them

meh, i'm much less worried about what is done, than i would be if i had tinted all of it. bsides personally i think it looks better that way. but that's just me.

I was just bustin your balls
i know, the way i see it is i'll probly have much less of a problem with the law since i have'nt actually tinted where any light comes out.
Yes, it may be less noticable but its still illegal.
There's no such thing as being a little illegal.
Going 33 in a 30 while not as obvious as doing 70 in a 30 is still illegal.
yup, totally agree, was just stating y i tinted it that way, first off, less noticeable, second i like the way it looks that's all.
AND I SAY...SCREW THE COPS...We customize cars as a passion...anything we do is "illegal" in their eyes...Let em hate...We are just havin fun with a bobby
