HID Question....
Thursday, November 05, 2009 5:55 PM
hey guys i have a set of HID's on my 97 cavalier and i just bought some for my 01 silverado. I have never had any problems with the cavalier but i just installed the silverado ones and because of the auto lights when you turn the key they come on automatically, then when you turn the truck on they flicker and one light goes out. does anybody know a PROVEN AND CERTAIN resolution to this problem!! thank you

My trailblazer did this too when I put HIDs in it....are you using a relay kit or no? I had one on mine but the relay was bad so it caused flickering and the lights to work when they wanted to. Got a new relay put on and they work fine...just hum a little bit on initial start up.

Does your truck have DRL's? If so, they need to be disabled. GM DRL's put out 80% power which doesn't work well with the ballasts. If it doesn't have DRL's, then I would try a relay kit as mentioned.

oh ya and i blew the driver side headlight fuse last night drive down the road so i just took them out till i get the relay. Will the relay help the lights not over draw current to blow fuses in the future?

The relay just gets power directly from the battery instead of taking it through the factory headlamp harness. It may help in the case youre refering to, but someone else can chime in and answer for sure.

i have a local customer that has an 04 silverado. He goes through bulbs faster than ANYONE else. He does NOT run a relay, and has similar problems, although not as bad. I made him install one, and since then I have not heard of any problems from him since the install of the relay harness.

Are your hids 35 watts or 55 watts?

im not sure how to tell what wattage my hids are. So JOHN BENHAM, you think that this relay would fix my issue on my truck? And you are saying if i dont run a relay i could blow bulbs?

if your setup is causing flickering, then yes, you are going to kill bulbs. the relay will solve your issue, assuming you hook it up correctly.

well i guess you could say its flickering, but only on initial start up then when it struggles to keep one of the lghts on and or one will go out. but my concern was the blowing a fuse in my truck. but like i said when you turn the key on they both start up and come on just fine its when you actually start the vehicle is when im guessing that it loosing juice to keep them both on so one goes out..............
