I just bought a fiberglass hood from automotive warehouse in Niagra on the lake. pic below
I want to turn it into a ram air. The car is actually a 2002 sunfire, so the engine is a 2200. I have a few questions of how to go about this. I have a pretty good idea in my head but not exactly sure what materials/filters to use. I was thinking a tube that stays attached to the hood even when lifted, with an inline filter. have no idea about what kind of clearance i'm looking at yet. just brain storming for now. also I'm not sure how to cut fiberglass, just tape it up and saw away with a blade with as many teeth as possible? and after I've cut the hole would I need to do some fiberglass work to get the airflow down into my engine bay? i don't want to start this project until I have all the details. Thanks.

its aerodynamicly impossible for that hood to "RAM" air in the motor.
at low speeds its not enough flow and at high speeds the aerodynamics of the car makes the air go right over the top of the hood (its not going in the scoop)
I saw a hood for sale in the ontario regional forum the same design as mine, but it has a fuctional hood scopp for ram air applications. Even so if this can't be used for that, I'd still like to cut a hole in the hood because without one it looks pretty bad. any tips or suggestions or is masking the area to be cut and a saw with many small blades my best bet?

masking tape the area and use a rotozip/dremel
My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again
i wouldn't cut it. i'd leave it be and maybe put a cover where a duct might be but that's it.
oh, update your sig too. lol

Are you kidding me? It looks like ass without a hole in the scoop. and I understand aerodynamics somewhat. and I think this hood would work fine for sucking in air once there is a hole cut in it. can anyone else maybe shed some light on this topic?

if you have looked at a "functional" ram air hood, and you looked at the underside, you would have seen that the underside is re designed to allow the scoop through the hood, and still stay stiff. to make that hood functional, you will have to cut away at the underside, and without adding alot of support to the hood, i foresee alot of issues with the hood. if it were me, i would do like mentioned above. get one of the crome/stainless grille for the vent. should just look fine.

first of all even with the scoop open its not gonna "suck" in air...
here's a link, this exact same thing was just discused.
if you read the whole thread (only 2 pages) eventually it gets to the functionality of the scoop on a turbo sport hood... which basically is exactly what were talking about here.

just buy a SS ram air hood and sell your hood.. the rk sport SS hood vents towards the airbox

get rid of the neon.
put the hub caps back on.
get one of those crome/stainless grilles for the vent
paint black if temporary

You know, your very opinionated. I know what you can do, stick to your own car. I'm cutting the scoop today.

did you read the post about the duct work in the functional ss hoods? what so your just going to dremel out the scoop part? where do you plan on putting this hole on the underside of the hood? directly below the scoop? that would defeat the purpose of a ram air hood because the air wont be going to your intake.
agreed with everyone else, i see nothing but problems with this.

and people wonder why we get @!#$
why would you buy a hood to hack it up....and in hacking it up, just making more problems for yourself as well is it not functioning correctly?
i understand making it a functional hood but i dont think you understand the amount of work that is going to be needed to make it a true ram air hood.
well cutting the outside isn't the problem...the hard part would be the underside of the hood.
should have just got a functional hood from the starting instead.

just tryin' to help you out. your gonna regret cutting up a nice hood.

I've already cut the hood. I only cut the scoop part though. I know if I try to cut the bottem half I'm going to run into some issues. if I were to cut the bottem out I know i'd have to be ready for some fiberglassing, or some other type reinforcement which i'm not ready for or really willing to do. If I want a fuctional scoop I know my options. A) lots of extra work to my hood reinforcing it. or B) a new hood. I was mainly going for the look for now, couldn't stand having a hood scoop, but it being filled in. I did buy this with the intentions of making it fuctional but the underside doesn't look too promising of accomplishing that.

, no way. really. why do you think i asked for a pic of the underside?
why square shaped?
just get that cover so it looks functional if all your wanting is looks for now.

man seems like to me he is the one that got on here asking for people's opinions, then when they wasn't what he wanted to hear he blew up at you all... so here is my .02! you all made great points on why this isn't a good idea and he chose not to listen to you and cut it anyway which is his choice it is his car.... but he is also the one that will regret it when the wind does go in the scoop in the hood and has no where to go and catches it wrong and rips the top layer of fiberglass to the point it separates from the lower half or it just cracks the $hit out of the hood from the air pressure...
I give props to the ones giving advise you all know what your talking about and you all made excellent comments
