Thursday, April 20, 2006 2:36 PM
ok what i got is an 04 cavalier. i need to remove the panel between the quarter glass and the back glass so i can get to the spot welds for the roof skin. it seems that it is attached with double sided tape or other adhesive. has anyone else taken this off? is there an easy way? thanks for the help.

Its a body panel adhesive, I don't think there is an easy way to take it off.

A delineator post shattered mine when I spun off the highway this winter. The dealer told me it has to be heated and chiseled off. Then when you get most of it off, you have to get all the glue and crap off of the metal (more heat+scraping).

STREET ANTIX, it's coming...

ok after i remove it what is the best way to remove the roof skin? does it need to be cut from the c piller or is the simply held by spot welds all around the top? thanks for the help

You will probably need a couple of spot weld cutters, kinda like a little hole saw, then you go around the panel and center punch every spot weld you see - then get to drilling them out with the cutter. It will be kinda frustrating because its easy to break the teeth off the cutters so take your time and you will eventually free it. Good luck

ok i see that but is that ALL that holds it on is the spot welds? see im asking because from where i can see it appears that i actually will have to get out a sawzall and cut into the pillar then just stagger my piller when i go back together with it. im not trying to sound like an ass just want to make sure i know what is going on with this particular car before i start cutting into structure. thanks again

ok ok ok...................1st i hope the glass is removed, and the interior either removed or coverd by welding blankets
the roof is held on by resistant spot welds and panel bond, here is a faster way take a cut of whell with a welding disk on it and grind down all the spot welds, but be careful you will go through the inner panel so watch what your doin

next use a panle seperator and a hammer and chisel all the way around where you ground down the welds you will also go through the panel bond, faster way use a air hammer with a panle seperator on it

now go around the entire inner roof structure and grind all the burs off and clean the metal, you have to use a weld through primer to prevent any rust from happening

ok so now you have the new OEM roof turn upside down on the stand, using a plastic coated disk remove the e-coat on the back side of the flange now if the roof has panel bond around the flange arear now is when you apply panle bond to the new panle and all mating surfaces

if you have acess to a resistant spot welder use that if not use a mig welder the flanges will have to be pre-drilled or punched out the maxium size is 5/16

panel bond has glass beaeds in it so you know how much clamping force will be needed

reinstall the weather stripping and close the doors to insure the roof is adjusted correctly
one more thing you never ever apply a body filler primer base coat only apply a e-coat back on the flanges both front and rear glass act as part of the cars structual integerty
it is not hard, but a long process if you have no experience in replacing panels this can be easily scwered up, i hope i shed some light on replacing a panel

can i haz bondo
