You *MIGHT* be able to get away with a real hi-gloss black. Basically the crome is there to act as a reflector, so ditching it could result in your lights not showing up bright enough.

Maybee try window tint film over the crome? never tried it, just a thought.

thats a great thought. but there aftermarket tails. so they have a red deflector. ill just take em apart and paint them just enough so you cant see the crome. and put em back together

from what ive seen on here your going to have a hell of a time seperating the lense from the housing on a tail light.

perhaps you could throw in a chrome housing. i have 5 to choose from with different shapes and sizes and they only cost 5.00. here they are...

sounds like you may want one of the small round ones. since they are made from fiberglass, you can cut and shape them to how you want them to fit.
let me know if you have any questions and good luck with everything.

i also have one more idea. if i tke off the clear lens. theres 2 different red lenses inside they look like this
if i left the lenses off and sealed off the bulbs inside of those lenses. would it be legal to still drive??

Nope. As long as you have the remaining internals, should be ok.

This is what I'm basing my "it should" off of...

The only aftermarket tail for 95-02 Sunfire coupes is the APC Retro 3d Tail.

If you notice from the pic, there is no outer lens, just the red lens.

Now by leaving off the clear lens from the Cavi tail, you will, in essence, have a version of the APC tails.

So, as long as you maintain the red lens integrity, there will not be an issue as far as legalities are concerned. The catch is whether or not the DOT stamp is on the clear lens, or on another piece of the housing.

Which has me thinking... since those are DOT approved, I may just end up converting a set over to a multi-bulb led setup in the interim, while I hammer out the stupid PCB board problem that I am having...
