I'm saving right now, to trick out my cavy, and i was thinking damm, not only to i need to save for the remaining exterior parts, but also need to save for custom paint and labor costs for a custom shop. help me out guys. Give me some ideas, to quickly trick out my ride. My kits has been sitting in my basement for 7months. And, I want my kit on.
Thanks guys
I've been working on my Cavy for 4 years!! Never done!
...only thing I can add to helping you out is never spend more than you can afford. I know that sounds stupid but don't blow you hard earned money on a mod unless you have it to waste! Meaning...if you don't need the money...spend it!
Another thing I do, save and pay cash! Don't put it on credit cards and such! A good job helps out as well and an understanding spouse (if married or involved!).
Have fun with it too and don't worry about how fast it comes together as you will always be doing something. Get a plan too...that way you don't waste money on stuff like a header if you KNOW you want to go turbo, etc!!!!
Develop the plan in parts, or years or by exterior/interior/engine/suspension/audio. Make your list and start buying something from each one when you have the EXTRA cash. Before long, you'll have more money in a car than you ever thought possible!!
Good luck!

Simple: Do it yourself. :-)
Or, if all else fails, just eat less.
work and save, thats all there is to it
i bought my kit and put it on, then took it to a guy who fiberglasses it together.
kit = 650
mold = 800
shaved trunk blend spoiler = 300
custom hood w/ eyelids = 350
but its all worth it to me

This is the single most important thing...sorry I forgot to say that!!
If you don't know how...find someone around you that does or can help/teach you!!! Sure there are other JBody owners near you or within a few hours drive! Buy a repair manual and read it!!

Dont worry I understand. I do everything myself and I finally saved up enough money for the type J kit and got it. So I put it cause at the time I had 700 dollars for paint so it would have been a month at most riding with an unpainted body kit.
Then I needed four new struts,
then I needed four new tires,
then I needed to pay my college expenses.
After that I was wiped out....been months still no paint.

Madjack wrote:Like I said before, building an engine like ours (2.2 or 2200) is a painstaking chore , since there is so few custom made parts. It's frustrating to me too, but that's what I like about doing this engine, it's the challenge.
save save and save, shop ebay for the occasional good deal, and try to mod as much as possible when you live at home (makes it sooo easy). I've been working on my car for 3 years and it has gone very slow (modding) from what i wanted. If all fails rob a bank and don't get caught.
save save save and save! did i mention save? keep your everyday expenses and bills as your first priority. when you have extra cash and don't need much of anything, stick it away and keep adding to it. even if it's just 20 or 30 dollars here and there. u will be surprised how fast it adds up, i went through the same thing. after u saved a decent amount up(800.00 to 1200.00) come up w/ a battle plan. do u wanna mod the exterior first? maybe u wanna hop up the engine a little first? and then u must decide to what extent? dod u want something nice w/ a lil extra oomph as a saturday night warrior? or do u want a carpet queen or a 14 mile killer? gotta save and then decide, no other ways around it. or u could play the state lotto.......
People say that what doesn't kill you in this life
will make you stronger. I'm not sure if that is true
or not, but i do know one thing-You have to learn from
it and it has to make you better.......it has to.......

... talk about expensive lol but seriously, learn to do the work urself, tis not as hard as it seems, just time consuming. for example this guy ^^^ (not trying to rag on u or anything, just using an example)
if he would have done all the work himself, he could have saved: over 1000 dollars!
Personally, i try and do all of the body work myself, then I just have a shop spray it/ finish up minor details i might have missed. this saves you ALOT of money
Honestly I have no idea how I did it...
$3800 for my turbo setup
$650 for my body kit
$350 for my hood
$450 for paint
$320 for seats
$150 for headlights
$120 for projectors
$440 for tires
$650 for rims
Thats just shy of $7k right there, and I'm just getting started. I also bought an $8000 daily driver so I could have more down time on the cav

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!
I just work, spend money on the g/f, and put money into the car. Thats about it . . . I haven't done anything major like kit or hood yet, but I will. Just gotta save, and know how to manage money, tyats the trick.
Do it in stages, I use my tax return each spring as the time is just about perfect when I get it back to buy some new parts for the next year, get them here, fitted/prepped, and installed.
Also by little things and warehouse them. I have a set of skirts that have been in my basement for a while now but need the orange paint. J-body owners are great to trade with as well have a part you don't need, maybe someone else does....
I have re done mine 3-4 times, All I can say is learn to do the work yourself. If not, dont go with the cheapest place or you will end up paying twice as much later...

Ok here are a few good options!
Sell Dope!
Get a Spripper GirlFriend!
Adopt some Rich Parants
I am currently using up option #2 and #3. Too lazy to sell dope!
Plus I am trying to mod 6 cars at once! Try that one!
2006 Solstice
2005 RX8
2005 xB
2004 SRT-4
1998 Cavalier
1999 Eclipse
I really need to choose one and F the Rest for now!
alot has to do with how you manage your money. the more you can save up for your car, the more you can get for your car (obvisouly).
Learning to do stuff yourself is very important too. going from shop to shop, you'll start spending alot more. Doing it yourself you gain some knowledge, you take pride in saying that you made it or worked on it, and you'll save alot of money this way aswell.
So far so good.... I appreciate the advise guys. And yes i have developed a mod list for future parts. Currently,I'm saving as I speak. Its not easy though. For, I have college graduate loan payments to repays and other everyday life bills. I just got frustrated because my bodykit is in the basement and i dont have the funds for the custom work. but as time progress, I will buy parts from my list little by little until ride is complete.
Thanks again guys
im in college, have a gf, and have over 6k in mods to my car
its all in how u manage
then again i dont have any bills to pay, nor do i have car payments. I bought my car stock in november of 04, its only been a little over a year and i already got it pretty far, again, managing ur money is all it takes.
P.S. I only make about 700 - 1000 a month. ( 6 bucks/hr working full time)

I fund my mods by having a meth lab in the trunk.
