Isn't the paint code listed in the VIN???
Thursday, February 23, 2006 11:29 AM
I feel like a retard asking this, but where is the paint code listed on the car? I always though tit was listed in the trunk, on the tire cover but there wasn't anything there. I've looked all over the car for anything resembling a paint code and no luck. It used to be GM put a tag somewhere on the car with all those diff nmbrs lstd. A little help here would be great. The car is purple and it's a 97, if that helps.

Well then I got hosed, because that's the first place I looked, but like I said, it wasn't there. I'm thinking the tire cover I have wasn't the original one. The old owner had a custom stereo and he put new trunk liner in before he got rid of it. If I go to the dealer, can't they just give me the paint code? It's the original paint, and there was only one purple the Cavaliers came in that I know of. Spring isn't too far away and I want to get the paint ordered so I can get her lookin' nice again.

There's two different paint codes... on that sticker, the main one that everywhere uses will start with "WA". Then there's a secondary code, with a U code. But usually only GM will understand those codes (if they understand at all).

I guess it depends on what paint store you ar using..... but you are right Lenko As far as you not having the code, taek it to a paint store and have them scan it or match it up. Never know, you may find a different shade/pigment that you like more..

only the dealer can get the paint code from the VIN#

if it was entered

and it wont always be correct since changes are made down the production line dont always get the same paint code or shade

I can't. Read my posts.

As for the others, thanks for ther suggestions. All I wanted it for was to match the areas I'm repairing and the new body parts when I get them, so matching to the current shade is a good idea. Thank you everyone.

Just be sure that the place you go to to have it color scanned knows what they're doing. I took it to one place, and the combo they came up with for my Mustang would have been nothing like my car's actual color. I blame the operator, so, like I said, watch out.

As 97cavie24ls(JDM&00s/c sedans™) said, the better way to get the paint code is giving your VIN# to the dealer part service attendant and it will show all RPO's(Regular Production Options) used to build your car including the paint code. Also, on some profesional paint stores they will help you using your VIN# as well. Good luck matching the paint.

Once again J-body.org comes through. Who would have thunk to look on the underside of the tire cover?
