I got a cat back and it was so clean when I got it . Now its covered with tar and not so shiny.
I tried the following things on it wheel cleaner(cleans chrome wheels really good) goo gone, alcohol, and windex they didn't really work at all . Should I heat it up first how should i do it and what should I use?

Listening mine is getting kinda nasty.
I'd suggest GooGone
Test it on an inconspicuous area of chrome but I really don't thing it'll do anything to it. However it EATS through tar and any stuck on dirt/grime.
Then I'd just polish it with some chrome cleaner/protector of your choice.

What exactly are you trying to clean? The muffler and tip(s) or the actually tubing coming off your cat? Also, it'd help to know if it's chromed, polished, etc before making a real good recommendation.
I've heard an SOS pad is great for getting carbon off the tips, but I havn't tried it myself yet.

I only have a chorme tip, but I've used Brillo Pads. They are great in also taking rust and other grime off metal/chrome pieces. Since then I've been using my Mother Chrome and Metal polish. Works great for me. Just gotta make sure to wash the tip off when you are washing the car as well.
I used to have a chrome tip. This stuff worked great. Got old constantly having to polish the tip to make the rust go away, only to have it return within a week. Ditched the chrome for full stainless steel. Bubye rust.
My vibrant ss muffler is 3 years old, and it looks wicked still, besides the dent and scuff, lol
But a buddy made a commet about my muffler 2 weeks ago; he thought i had a new muffler; i said nope, 3 years old.
Yes, i found it does help to get off road grime and crap when the muffler is hot; the crap comes off much easier; so it would be good after you have been driving your car for a bit to come home and give her a clean right away; and i use Nufinsih, its in a orange bottle; its a white creme, works aweome for s.s.
Neverdull works so good for Polished intakes and strut bars; i did not like it on my muffler.
Good luck bud.

Steal wool is your best bet. Im not sure which guage you need, but if you go to home depot, I know that they have them there in the paint department, and just look on the back. It will say which guage you need to clean chrome.

how about black chrome? my tip is pretty nasty now from all the salt and @!#$ on the road, just afraid to use anything because it might peel the chrome

well it shouldn't hurt it I don't think, unless it was chorme plated, you might scratch it off, and since its black it would be more appearent. I'd say test it out on an area you wont really see.
lol now I sould like one of those instruction labels
you can use mothers polish w/ a 0000 steel wool pad, put the polish on the steel wool and then rub it in and use a rag to buff it out or like they said above the nxt polish w/ steel wool.

ok i dont know the real answer because i dont have one. and it looks like you need to know how to get tar off i guess. well i really thing warming it up should help so maybe if you drove the car around for a while and let it get kind of hot....then take some kind of scrapper and it should peel off.....maybe a sos or something. i know that sos willl get things like rust of so why not try that....and im pretty sure it wont scratch up your chrome. and from all the posts above you know how to clean it up after you get it off.
