Projector Headlights problem (too dark)
Saturday, September 17, 2005 10:09 PM
I have one installed on mine... and I have a big curiosity....

Before I put it on, I had Xenon lights which were quite bright...

then I switched to projector and with that, it looks very nice... but it was dark.... seem as not nearly enough light goes through it to shine the road...so much that my fog light would be lot brighter.... (got pulled over once for not having my headlight on cuz it's no use in practical ways...)

Anyways, I replaced my Xenon with HID and it brighted up more... but not nearly enough to the degree I want and need sometimes for safe driving...

Do everyone who own projector lights have this problem??? or did I buy a wrong one? cuz it looks very nice.... especially w/ HIDs but I'm thinking of going back to stock looking one as that will engliten the road infront...

Did you buy the projectors that are all over ebay? Because even with HID the light output isnt anything special;thats not from personal experience but what Lenko said.

I think the problem is that the projectors that they put in those headlights are garbage. They're projectors but not really the kind made for HID. I think what you need to do is a retrofit of projectors from another car (bmw, benz, lexus etc) and that should clear up lighting issues.

Brawn, explain little bit more plz.... retrofit??? do they sell it w/ that thing?

I already tried to clean the inner part up by putting lots of lens cleaners inside and wiping with with cotton at the end of chopstick... but did not good....

You're saying exchanging the projector itself? who makes those as I did bought it off ebay and paid good amount for it... lol

I'm even considering the possibility of giving up on the projectors....

Retrofitting would be removing the projectors that are causing you the trouble and installing in their place the projector lens unit from another vehicle / manufacturer.

if the saturn L300 headlights are cheaper than a pair of bmw's or s2000 then you can get those because they have projectors in them.

The best way i can think of to fix it is change the direction of the bulb. So the side is the part being projected, not the top of the buld.

ur supposed to take them apart and the a half circle thing u take out thats inside the projector ur also supposed to use low wattage bulbs cuz u can burn the projector housing

I tried to turn the HID bulb so that it can get more exposure, but didn't help much.... only little bit.... when I looked inside, there was this metal part, about half way blocking the front of bulb and I guess the light is suppose to reflect from backside of bulb to be shined... but that's not working very well...

Marco, could you rewrite that? I have hard time understanding that...

I've been dealing with very poor light from my junk projectors for years now. Tomorrow i'm goin to have to try what Marco suggested.

Just wondering if you've actually done this or if you just think this the way to fix the problem?

I had this problem... then i went to HIDs and they are brighter than my stocks... and much blue/whiter...

That half circle piece of glass they are talking about is the convex lens that makes your light a projector... remove that and its NO LONGER A PROJECTOR....

projection headlights were designed to brighten a distance and wide area... this interns spreads the light out and its not as concentrated in front of your car... you actually can see more with projectors... its just not as bright 5 feet in front of your car... True HIDs (with the ballasts too... not just HID bulbs) will solve that problem...

The one on the left is a Silviania Silverstar HID style H7 bulb

and the one on the right is a true HID H7 with ballast

the headlights are BMW E36 Projection

Are these the matrix type projectors. I think Matrix Type projectors may have that issue. All those with APC projectors and HID's don't seem to have to much issues. I have APC projectors and this is what it looks like with HIDS.

UPDATE - I just went out and removed one of my headlights. To remove the plate inside of the projector housing you will need to cut apart the housing.

I had APC projectors and they sucked for light output. The brights rocked, but the low beams were useless. I couldn't see anything at night. Lucky for me, they got destroyed in an accident and I put my factory lights back in. Soooo much better.

^^^^ If i remember correctly you were using HID like some of us in this post.. We know light outout sucks on Stock bulbs you really need to get HID's and My HID's in APC are much better than stock. Correct me if i am wrong about you not using HID's.

No HIDs....never quite got a chance before they got smushed. I still doubt the HIDs with the APC was that great....they beam pattern from the plastic lens just sucked. It wasn't very clear plastic in the first place.

I think Mylife75, you were saying I need Projector headlight made for HID, right?

I just bought a random one off ebay...

where can I get the good projectors?

and yes, to remove the metal part blocking the light, we need to cut the housing in half, I took it out little bit ago...
