I imagine this may be ill advised but I dont have a spray gun and am pretty damn good with spraypaint and I have rock chips and scratches all over my freaking hood and thought about just doint a flame paint job to cover it up, and it would by no means be taking up even half of my hood cuz the rest is pretty good still, I am talking about taping off, multi grit dry and wet sanding, priming, painting and clearcoating ....with spray cant touch up paints.....would this last a while or any other suggestions?
Its all about the pain...The Jewelry and Ink are just souvinirs
umm might try to get paint from www.paintscratch.com at least its automotive paint in a can
We can make you paint factory colors and put it in a 12 oz aresol can..
POLYFIBER kits $375 (BMX, BC2, Blitz, Drift, KMAX) *

You can go ahead and do that... but if you take it to a body shop and have them paint it at any time...they're going to hate you for it...
Spray can paints tend to gum up sandpaper really quick and not want to come off. We had an Extreme come into the shop once, where this kid tried to fix the dent behind the passenger side door at the bottom of the bed by himself... 4-5 inches of bondo and spray can factory paint. It took me FIVE count them FIVE GRINDER discs (usually 26 - 36 grit) to get JUST THE PAINT OFF!!!
THat's just an FYI... do what you wish, it's your car
^^ paint we seill is Dupont.. The same stuff that you shoot out of a gun, but in a can..

^^^ stuff in a can is still not nearly as good as stuff from a gun... speaking from years of auto body and paint...
BTW Whiteboy... I MIGHT actually be making it to the bash afterall... so I'll see what I can do with getting you paint
Well, here is my opinion, stuff in an aresol can can be shot at the same PSI of a pump/compressor.
I have have a few different auto guns: DeVilbiss Gravity fed and Sharpe Gravity fed, they both can get clumps and clogs also, trick to using any paint sprayer is to keep the tip clean, and you chouldn't have any problems.
Being able to not overcoat the area with paint, thats a skill you will have to perfect on your own, thats what most people do with any type of sprayer they use(not just from a aresol can).
My suggestion to Lil Blue Rocket: Buy a Sharpe auto sprayer (Sharpe Finex Mini-HVLP Gravity Feed Spray Gun = $75.00 or so, thats assuming you have a compressor), only reason I suggest this is once you start auto painting you will want to do it more, and you will have a nice starter gun.
well I was going to get automotive paints in aerosal as well as the primer and clearcoat, eventually I want to get a spray gun but at this time it is not feasible

hey i'm doing my whole car in duplicolor auto primer right now
it's rpobly going to look like anus later, but since you're doing a small spot i think you're safe
"I live my life a quarter mile at a time..." "for those ten seconds or less I'm free"
Do it the right way or dont do it at all
There is no wrong way to custom paint a car, just a different look.
If you wanted a textured look use a freaking brush or a damn roller, doing it a different way doesn't make it WRONG, it just makes it different.

LOL at that sh;t
Theres are reason they make automotive grade paint....................

Thank you! Seems no one listened to me when I said that earlier... and I"ve been painting for years...

the brand doesnt matter, its what is in it that matters. the reason the paint gums up the sand paper is because it technically never completely dries. yes, its dry to the touch and all, but not chemically. You cant put hardner in with it or it would harden in a can. Or it would only have like a 24 hour shelf life, and that would leave no time for shipping. when you paint with actual automotive guns and materials, you dont add the hardners until your ready to paint or pretty close to being ready.
as for the paint on your car, if you do it right then it might not look bad as a temporary thing, but like fallen angel said, its going to make it a hassle when you finally decide to make it all permanent. if your going to do it tho, make sure you sand down the chips to feather the edges out (so you cant see them under the new paint), and then scuff the rest of the area being painted with a grey scotch brite.

amen to dat !!!
I dont have a spray gun and am pretty damn good with spraypaint and I have rock chips and scratches all over my freaking hood and thought about just doint a flame paint job to cover it up,
you make me laugh!!!! seems to me that you are absolutely clueless about body and paint work
so why don`t you let the pro`s do the job, and leave the rattle can to the side of a box car
can i haz bondo
I don't care what that website says... aerosol spray cans and body work are a big no no...
I've been doing this for years I know what I'm talking about...
do whatever you want... I will NEVER NEVER use a spray can on a customer's car... nor recommend it.
Big daddy....you can shut your yap and take your comments to the playground with the rest of the kids......I am by no means a expert but I know enough about paint and body work......otherwise I would have just painted with the damn spray cans, I never heard of using them other than small touch up jobs but seen info on the net saying how great these auto spray cans can be, hence the freaking question now on to real talk...
hows about any thoughts on airbrushing.....this I have now clue about its use in automotive painting I dont think it is the same as I have used back in the day but I am intriqued about the use for pinstriping, flames and such...but the AUTO paints I found say they are some like high end water based.......how good is this paint??
Its all about the pain...The Jewelry and Ink are just souvinirs
Airbrushing is sweet on cars, if done correctly.
For larger flames you won't get the best results, unless you are doing several smaller layers of flames( the spray radius is very small with an airbrush, usually used for the finer detailed paint work).
Using the aerosols should be fine for a cover up of chips, you aren't expecting a professional job, looks to me you are just trying to make it look better then the chipped up hood you have right now.
I could post about 25 more websites(some companies have been painting auto's for 40+ years and they use aerosol cans for smaller area painting/primer/clear), but it is based upon opinion if you will use it or not...
But I repeat, it is not "WRONG" to use "aerosol automotive paint" to paint a portion of your hood. I have seen different dip-bond painting turn out very nice also, but this method is usually only done with chameleon or prism style paint jobs.
Maybe aerosol is to modern for some people to take seriously, they are more traditional painters and can't break from "ways of old"?
like i said clueless about auto body /paint work
if you know so much then why are you askin ??
you make me laugh
can i haz bondo
dude take a hike, no where did I even imply I was very body/paint smart...I know enough to be confident I could do a ok job and look better than the rock chips and scratches......its better to get others opinions than jump in as a mere novice.......

if big daddy's comments bother you (like many others) just ignore him. By arguing with him or telling him off you're only giving him more satisfaction in the end.
and Kross...
I've been doing auto body and paint for about 5 years or so. I'm only 24... and am by no means "old school" about paint. I just don't trust it... especially when someone used the aerosol to "fix" their truck and it took me FIVE grinder discs to just get the paint off...
Lol, Fallen Angel, I have also been there, and it sucks bad, Especially when my Disks are over $4 a pop.
Hell, I've had so bad that we sand blasted an entire car cause it had almost 3/8 of an inch thick paint on it (someone told him thicker coats meant deeper color.).
But the layers and spurts where from a SATA 1200 professional setup, only a $3000 paint rig, but the painters didn't know how to paint with watercolors let alone using
$75.00 for 2 oz of HOK Pearl Ice Blue and $60 a quart base.
Just goes to show...
Some people do actually have more money then brains.
But the moral of this story is... it's not usually the product that makes the paint job look @!#$ty, 90% is user negligence or ignorance.
