Headlight Covers
Sunday, April 10, 2005 10:20 AM
I recently purchased headlight covers for my J-Body and was warned by friends that they're not good for night driving...they say 'street legal' on the box, so I assume they have to be. But I don't want to install them if someone on here tells me out of past experience they're garbage, then I'd be able to return them without hassle.

Thanks.

For one, they will limit the light that goes through.

And even if the box says "street legal", they still can be in your state. Im sure theres fine print somewhere explaing to check with your local laws. Same with Hyper white headlights, they say street legal, but then in fine print on the bottom it says 'for offroad and display us only, check local laws before using in public'.

So ya... check your local laws lol

Well, you forgot to mention what color they were (smoke, cf, clear), or if they had the masking on them. However, here's the deal: if they are smoke or cf, they're not legal anywhere on the road, because they cut down severely on how much light passes through them from the headlights, as well as the turn signals. You didn't mention if you have a cav or fire, and year, so I'm covering all bases.
If they are clear, 100% legal anywhere. If they are masked, as long as the clear part is where the headlight shines through, and/or turn signal, you're fine.
However, that being said, I drove around all the time, even at night, with smoke covers on my old cav, and never got pulled over for it, and even got pulled over for something else and didn't get a ticket for the covers. I lived in MA and NY with that car, and had no problems in either state.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I'll probably just return them.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but it's a '97 Sunfire GT, and they're black headlight covers. I've seen a few guys around town with them on and I liked how they looked, so I thought I'd try them. Luckily I asked here before I put them on.

Thanks again.

Well, since you have a 97 fire, it only covers the headlights, not your turn signals. When you say black, I'm assuming they're the smoke ones (look pretty much black when on, but light passes through them.) One thing to consider is getting brighter bulbs, like Silverstars, and that way it will make up a little bit for the loss of light.

I have a smoked set for my Sunfire too and they do look pretty good. I drive with mine on at night sometimes, but they cut out a lot of light. If you're driving in the city they would be fine but if you're out in the country I'd just take them off after dark. It's not like once you put them on, they're on there forever.
