Crank & Cam Position Sensors
Thursday, April 18, 2013 7:01 PM
Hey guys, I just need to verify something about the Cam and Crank position sensors on an LD9 (specifically a 98-99)...

Are the Crank and Cam position sensors HALL type sensors or MAG type sensors?

I think they are Hall but I want to be sure as this affects how I wire a piggyback in.

Thanks for any help!

Well you see, to know how other sensors work, and what they are suppose to do.

Chris I'm pretty sure your right. I think it says in my Haynes manual and will look later today.

Thanks John, if you can let me know what page you may find that on I just DL'd the Haynes manual yesterday looking for the wiring diagrams and didn't see any mention of the sensor styles for these two.

i didnt read up on every sensor john. i read up on the one that mattered in our situation, the lambda sensor.

i am sorry i am not an expert on every sensor in the engine. when can i start classes at FU?

easiest way to tell.

2 wires = Variable Reluctance sensor (mag)
3 wires = Hall effect

the reason hall effect has more wires is because it requires a 5v reference
also worth noting is it outputs a square wave, so it requires no external circuitry

VR sensors output a SIN wave that needs to be interepreted and translated into a square wave by electronics built into where the signal is going (in our case the engine controller)

you normally can't swap one for the other (hall effect vs. VR) because of the different signal outputs.

Awesome thanks for the info PJ, now to pull up the Haynes manual and check the wiring to both those sensors.

Time to start drawing up some wiring diagrams for the car...

Hmm it looks like the crank position sensor is 2 wires (mag) and the cam position is 3 wires (hall)... anybody want to confirm?

99% of the time, that's the case

ie. crank = VR and cam = Hall

LSJ is the same way

Crank is certainly VR.

If this info is for a standalone, also be aware that the leading edge of the crank pulse is inverted because our 6+1 trigger wheel uses notches for crank angle rather than teeth.

The Cam is probably Hall effect, but I'v never monitored this signal before, so I don't know for sure. Like PJ said, if it has 3 wires, then it's a safe bet it is.

I have no signiture

What I saw in the haynes manual is in section 6-8, but ti does not say which we have but talks about Hall effect (3 wire) sensors (crankshaft, camshaft).

I'm about 90% sure the Cam sensor is a hall effect sensor, and the crank is a Variable Reluctance sensor.
