Tuning for Cams

Anything in peticular you can change to smooth out the idle?

You can raise the Idle rpm.
Should I change the idle ignition timing? Because my timing is going all over the place at idle (like +8*-22*)
To make the p0300 misfire code go away, do most tuners just eliminate the code or change a setting so it smooths out the idle?

Anything else?

I am also curious in this too. My car does about the same thing, flucuates between 2 and 15 while idling... seems to only to it when lobing alittle bit though.

I dont know about the code you have or the trouble with the timing. however, if you have larger size cams rough idle is part of the territory. It will be lopey and raising the idle is the only way to smooth it out.

Lol, its got some lope.

Do most "tuners" disable the p0300 code?

raising the RPM should smooth it out. You may need to mess with your stock timing advance, most aftermarket cams advance a few degrees, I know comp camps do. That may be part of your issue. I would be hesitant to disable that code because i'm pretty sure that cams shouldn't throw that code.

Are you getting any knock?

I raised the idle to 975 so far. I messed with the idle spark advance table (raised it to 13 adv) not sure if that's the right thing to do, but i'm just messing with it. Looking for advice.

1. at idle you don't want negative timing, plus any fluctuation with timing will cause issues with boosted or N/a motors.
2.pm me for email addy and forward me your tune.

Take away VE at idle, after all there is less air going in to the engine at idle now.

wow ok I'm glad that works for you ... your dash must look great with all the tape on it .... HAHA

why would you disable a code that tells you of a misfire...... why not just find what the problem is and fix it ???

i thought that code was due to the cams like the cps code on my car due to not having the pad on my intake cam so thats why i said to just disable it

As has been previously mentioned, DTC P0300 : Random Cylinder Misfire, is a common problem when using aftermarket cam grinds. Adjusting the idle speed up along with some tweaking of the idle A/F mixture and timing will usually cure the code most of the time, unless your running a really aggressive grind. If your running that hot of a grind you should be running a stand-alone system anyways.

Mine didn't trip this code for the first couple of years, but as the motor got more wear and tear, it started creeping in on occasion. I can usually head it off buy erasing the DTCs (active and pending) before driving the car any significant amount of distance.

HPT is no good for my PCM, as it's a '96 and isn't supported. The new cam I have is a more aggressive than the current Crane regrind I have and the new head is ported more aggressively, has the +1mm valves and is surfaced 0.020" more than the current head. This will more than likely trip the P0300 code more often, but when I do the cam and head install, I'll also be installing an engine wiring harness and PCM from a '97 and getting that tuned.

when you tune for a bigger cam what do you want to do with the spark?
