Commanded afr at startup?
Saturday, January 10, 2009 7:22 PM
Is this supposed to happen? When I start the car, my commanded afr is near 10:1. Every couple of seconds, it leans out a tad until it rests at 14.6:1. Is that right, or is there a setting I can change. It idles like crap that rich.

Thus why I made the thread on HPT about missing tables.....

But everyone else in the world can get their car to start right up. Once it commands the 14.6 afr, it idles fine. I don't understand why it takes FOREVER to get it to start!

This pisses me off. I blow all this money on a wideband and HPT to discover that I can't even make my car idle right. I know HPT isn't God's gift to tuning. But, what did I change that drastically affects my idle? My changed my VE offset....that's it. I copied stock values to my idle table with the same offset, and the car barely starts.

Help.

What year ecm are you tuning? I had the same issues with mine.

At least I THINK it's a 2003. I did a complete write of a 2003 base tune. Does that change the ecm year or no?

I noticed this too on my set up. One way to remedy this is to change the coolant temp at which it will cycle to closed loop operation (this is in the OL & CL section). Just be sure to take it easy on the throttle until its fully warmed up. This was what I did. I could not see a reason to be wasting all that fuel at idle. I get in my car, start it, and drive off keeping the TPS very low until its warmed up.

Alternatively, you could slightly lean out the idle VE table, since it's really only used when the car is in open loop right after start up. Just keep this change in mind if you ever do open loop tuning, because your idle may be a little lean.

Yes, after only a month of HP tuning, I'm seeing how little we actually have for the Jbody...

I have not had a problem with this. my car switches to closed loop very fast. I never changed those fields from stock. With the heater O2 sensor it switches very fast. Also a reason I know we are missing files.

Chris PM me and mail me your file if you want I will take a look at it and see if there's anything obvious. Also what injectors do you have? Stock fuel pressure? Update your profile.

I feel kinda dumb for making this thread....but when I changed my VE offset, I didn't copy the stock VE tables to the new offset ones...so I'm dumb.

I'm still running rich on startup though, I think I might change my OL and CL settings like oldskool suggested. That's a great idea.

I'm not really having issues anymore except a dumb misfire that I can't seem to get rid of.

Here's another thing to consider, for some reason when it's cold out I have this same issue, but otherwise it's fine. Seems like there's a setting somewhere we're not seeing. Yes, I'm aware of the OL/CL settings, but it doesn't happen before it reaches the temp on warm days. Like it was said, changing the OL/CL temp to be a lot lower may help your situation. Call me if you have any more questions.
