As the title says I have the harness and ms out of the car and I was wondering if instead of buying a full atom board can I just power up with a 12 volt bat I just want to work on getting the board. To connect

Yes you can Jason, but what good will it do you? Megatune won't respond unless it reads an RPM signal (i.e. you will see dead gauges). The stim board provides an RPM signal, TPS, MAP, MAT, CLT and a few other signals via potentiometers. I hve the old model stim board and it works well, but this new design looks much better in my opinion. It is well worth it to own one in my opinion.

Im not looking to do any sensor data Im simply looking to get the car to connect with my PC Im almost positive you dont need an rpm signal to show connectivity.
I might pick up a board later on, but for now Im just want to try and get the board talking the same language.

If you are looking to just upload the code from the board or download a code to the board, then there is no need for the stim board, and you are correct. All you need is a 12v source (provided it can flow enough current) to run the board.

^ Correct

Jason, I got an older version stim board I'll sell. I bought the new JimStim and don't need it anymore.

yeah? im down pm sent
either way thats all I wanted to do was to get the board up and talking I was pretty much asking about the amperage. Im mean I guess its pretty obvious the volts are right, but I was concearned about the power. I mean it doenst really drive anything heavy (espically with the outputs unhooked) but I wanted to make sure thanks guys

I doubt you need anymore more than an amp or so to get her to turn on.

Remeber....a 9volt powers the stim and the MS. I don't know the internal resistance of a 9v but I do know that once the battery hits about 7.8volts its game over. I'm also not sure of the amperage off the top of my head, but I'd be surprised if a 9volt could lay down much more than 1 amp which would be .75amps @ 12volts. Maybe im wrong....this is all while trying to remember what the damn 9v says on the side for max amps....I could be wrong.

yup, 9v battery is all you need. just connect it to power and ground, it the MS will power up. you can then work out your comm link setup, and upload the Msns-E firmware if you are going to do so.
