Hey, i finally started to piece together my own turbo kit. i went with the Saab setup for now, I'm still in the middle of getting everything together, but i was having some doubt on how i should do things. I've been doing a lot of reading and can't find an answer. So, i'm ordering HPT within the next little bit so i can tune it once i get a hold of what im doing. The question is would it be easier to use a FMU while using HPT for tuning? I was thinking this because if i had the FMU i wouldn't have to worry as much about going lean while trying to tune.
Sorry for the long read,
Thanks,

im no expert at tuning but i think you will throw off youre tuning if you still have a fmu on there while trying to set up hpt just my 2cents
Yeah, i was thinking the same thing too... but i was reading it was pretty easy to add fuel witht he FMU and take it away with HPT... I planned on using just HPT but i'm not sure if i'm capable yet, so i was thinking, instead of going really lean and possible breaking something if it would be easier to start with putting a FMU on there and work from there.

oh i completly understand what youre doing and why i would be the same way im a little leary to mess with hpt myself for the same reason i just think you might be adding headache to the situation but like i said im no tuning expert so let me know how it works for ya
A few guys have used fmus' and have incorporated hpt. Look up Skunk and Wrench Monkey. I believe they have used it for some set up.
Been running this setup for almost 3 years now...
A few things need to be understood before you use an FMU with HPT but once you get past the initial details you'll see it works quite well.
Keep in mind that you tune the FMU first and then use HPT to iron it all out.

Slowly but surely may some day win this race...
yeah thats what i was thinking of doing, getting the fmu set close to where it should be. then make everything perfect (or so it doesn't explode) with HPT. lol.

Exactly what got the tune correct on my car, I already had the fmu fairly tuned in then Tom (Wrench Monkey) and I went into the ironing out of the details. It is a fabulous combonation as long as you've got a reliable FMU.

So you're saying for a first time tune i'l be better off with both?

Yes, you rough in the fuel for when your in boost with the FMU, then fine tune with HPTuners and also use it for logging, timing and setting Closed/Open loop etc.

Ok, that makes a lot of sence. After reading a few pages about that FMU i was kinda curious about a few things. Skunk said you tune in the FMU fairly close first but by the looks/sounds of it that one does it more or less automatically? i mean, what im trying to say is how would you know if its a 1:1 ratio of fuel to boost pressure? or would you see that through the data logging of HPT.
Thanks.
