Need some help with a reflash
Friday, December 14, 2007 4:02 PM
Alright, I just got done boosting my friends 2.4 2000 Cavalier , from what he was telling me the factory makes a s/c kit for his car. He has been calling around trying to get someone to reflash it. Out of 5 dealers there is only on person that is qualified to do it, the tech is saying that he needs a calibration # in order to do it. Can I get some info on this, or a way to get around it. Thanks

Actually if he or you know someone that has HPTuners, you can reflash his car w/ the factory s/c reflash with that, and then further fine tune it from there. As for a calibration number, can't help ya. sorry man. gl

Thats easy, because there is so many hptuner guys running around in Utah, so the dealership wont do it then?

Dealership might do it, but it would be a ton easier to get the s/c file from someone on here and just flash it that way.

So if I can get a hold of someone with HPT then get the update all they have to do is hook it up and reflash it? What about this company, or is there someone on the forums I can send it to get it done? http://www.pcmperformance.com/programming.html#SUPPORTED%20VEHICLES What about a mapclamp, I know with my car I can tun a little with one, not quite sure about you cavalier guys, lol thanks for the help

To answer your first question, the answer is yes as long as the cavalier is unlocked via HPT, if not you will need to purchase credits to unlock and it takes 2 to unlock a car. As for that company, i have never heard of them so i cant give you any advice on it and again w/ the mapclamp, im not sure. hopefully someone like shifted will chime in.

MAPClamp won't work, our cars are alpha-N, not speed density, so changing the MAP sensor won't work. Haven't heard much about pcmperformance...

First the dealer said that they would do it, but then they turned around and said that they needed the calibration # so they could call GM and get another number that allows them to put the information on the PCM....

safc just tune fuel..you need hptuners to control how much timing to pull and all that other jazz

our pcm doesnt use map as a factor in fuel tuning, therefor it wont work. only way it would work was if u did the s/c reflash, but by then ur prob would have been solved

The guys who buy and use the SAFC don't really do their homework, they buy it because it looks cool and APEXi is a known name. They install it, get a bunch of cool lights and numbers, but for some reason, it just never works right. Since our cars use alpha-N (the fuel table is RPM vs Throttle Position), and the spark table is speed density (RPM vs MAP), and all the SAFC does is alter the MAP signal, it just adjusts timing.

Also, the SAFC adds fuel by increasing the MAP reading, works great until you max out at 5V on a 1 BAR MAP. 5v is the very beginning of boost, less than 1psi, so the SAFC can't adjust (add any more voltage to the MAP) while your in boost.

97 was speed density, all other years were alpha-N, from the factory. If it has the S/C reflash, then its speed density, but since he's saying he wants to circumvent the reflash, his definately is alpha N.
