Hello all.
I've recently been thinking alot about my cavy. In short, it blows. 2.2L auto + Intake = MAYBE 119 HP. This does not satisfy my need to stomp on other cars. Unless I spend a crap-ton of money on this car, it will NEVER be fast. Therefore I think I should just get a whole new car.
So I guess what I'm looking for is a cheap, quick, reliable daily driver. I don't really want a Honda, because even at 200K miles, they STILL sell for $5,000. My co-worker suggested a Mazda Protige 5, but when I looked it up they only have 130HP stock and weigh around 2700. That makes me sad. :-(
So what I need is suggestions from all of you. Quick, Cheap, Daily Driver, easily upgradable is kinda what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance!
you're going to get a lot of people telling you to buy what they have... which im going to do. any newer grand prix with the 3800 series II and up is good, especially a supercharged one. good power, easy to mod. along those lines, a Buick Regal GS, Impala and Monte Carlo, both SS superchared will do the trick as well. they're not the cheapest car out there, but i got my '97 for $5,000. just somethin for you to look into.

I looked into the 97 200SX SE-R's, and I'm starting to like how they look. Although ones in the links provided above were nice, I'd rather not buy anything quite that old.
The 97's come with the 2.0 DOHC engine with 140HP and 132lbs tourque, and run 15.6 in the 1/4. While that's not great, I'm guessing with some boltons I could get it down to 14's? I'd be happy with low 14's.

Fast, cheap, reliable. Pick 2. I would try to find a early to mid 80's muscle car. Camaro, Mustang, Monte Carlo, etc.
a 60/70s car that needs some restoration
restore it enough to put a roll cage in it and a tube front end
and build up the motor
should be able to pull out 11s
or get a foxbody stang (early 90s late 80s) and build the motor add a 150shot n20 and you will be in 11s

cheapest easiest to mod somewhat reliable car: 90's civic. no joke - they're easy to find, and the aftermarket is stupendous.
failing that, a 240 - but get it BEFORE F&F3 comes out.

Tube front end to run 11's? Why bother. He's trying to do something cheap. Restoring a car = not cheap unless you know what your doing. I'm doing everything myself on my Nova and I'm still going to end up spending a lot more then I planned on.
You could probably pick up an 87-92 Mustang with the 5.0 HO for under $5,000 if you look around. They had forged internals from the factory and can take quite a beating. Car Craft had an article about a 91 Mustang motor that made 400hp with a stock cam and 165cc smog legal AFR heads and a carburetor. Car Craft also had an article in the latest issue about a 9 second turbo Fairmont running on a stock bottom end.
That would be a good long term project but for now you could get away with spraying on it. Get the tune right and you will be able to run a 150 shot all day long.

Alot of you are suggesting monster V8's however, which isn't really something I'm looking for. Gas prices make me sad too. :-(
The Grand Prix suggestions however intrigue me... Must look in to this further. I'm still kinda leaning towards a 200SX, but I also saw 240SX mentioned as well. Gotta research that one too.
Anyone know from experience how good these 200SX cars are? I hear they take to boost incredibly well...

Gonna need a Daily Driver which is why I kinda want a 4 banger. Transport car on the weekdays, playtoy by night and weekend.

get an older hatchback escort - you know, the little lightweight coupe. there's a kit out there that adds HP like a mofo. i don't know much about it, but i know it exists. the car is cheap as hell, they can/will run forever, and it sips gas.

My v8 gets 26 MPG on the freeway.
I sacrifice performance for gas mileage.
Sport Compact Car had an issue a couple of months ago about cheap speed. They listed a few feature cars that were built from anywhere between 5-10k. They had a 240 that a guy put about 10k into it and it was incredible. There was also a late 80's dodge omni turbo that looked like a @!#$box but ran 12's, and the total project cost less than 5 grand. There was also a first gen eclipse that was putting down a lot of power for reletively cheap.
A couple of years ago they also had a 4G63 powered Hyundai Excel (1994 I believe), it was cheap to build, because the 4G63 was pretty much a direct swap. I don't have the magazines readily on hand, but I believe it ran 12's.
And finally, you could throw about 5 grand into your cavalier and run a pretty decent turbo setup and get what you want that way. Your call.

Do you really think my poor little auto 2200 could handle a turbo? 105K miles, runs good, I'm just afraid to break it.
I also saw that issue, I think the reason the dodge omni was so quick was because of a nasty swap. Very nifty. I was also thinking about that mitsubishi eclipse as well. Boost is it's friend.
the omni glh was turbo from the factory so they probably just built up the engine
